Barry Faulkner COSTA MESA - Three weeks ago to the day, C.J. Zuniga showed up at Costa Mesa High, an unknown transfer from Prescott, Ariz. with a Grand Canyon full of potential. It's safe to say, after rushing for 171 yards and four touchdowns in the Mustangs' 28-19 nonleague season-opening victory over Saddleback Friday at Orange Coast College, there are few who still do not know the new man on campus. "My teammates welcomed me with open arms," said the 5-foot-10, 185-pound junior tailback, who began his prep career as a freshman on the Rosemead High varsity, before starting at defensive end for Prescott's varsity last fall.

package Barry Faulkner Geographically, C.J. Zuniga's high school career, though barely past the halfway point, has zigzagged from California to Arizona, back to California again. But when the Costa Mesa High junior tailback tucks the football under his arm, he prefers a less circuitous route. "I like to run straight ahead, because that's the quickest path," Zuniga said. "I love to hit." The 5-foot-10, 185-pounder, who played some varsity games his freshman year at Rosemead High, then played varsity last season at Prescott High in the Grand Canyon State, has been a huge hit with the Mustangs.

NEWPORT BEACH - Even after trouncing its opponent a week later, Costa Mesa High still couldn't get its mind off losing to Estancia last week. "This was a big turnaround for us," Costa Mesa football coach Jerry Howell said, following his team's 45-21 Pacific Coast League victory over visiting University Friday night at Newport Harbor High, where the Mustangs (5-2, 1-1 in PCL) set the tone on the game's first play -- a 67-yard kickoff return by C.J. Zuniga.

Barry Faulkner COSTA MESA - The Costa Mesa High defense, which prides itself on holding opposing blockers accountable, hopes it won't be forced to run for cover when the Mustangs host Pacifica in a CIF Southern Section Division IX first-round football playoff game Friday at 7 p.m. at Orange Coast College. Mesa (8-2 and the No. 3 seed) regularly unleashes as many as eight defenders toward the opposing backfield from its four-four scheme. But pass-happy Pacifica (6-4)

Barry Faulkner With first-round CIF Southern Section football playoff losses by Corona del Mar High and Costa Mesa, the statistical book is now closed on three of the four Newport-Mesa District squads. But not before players at Estancia and Costa Mesa prompted some rewrites. Estancia High senior Marshall Hendricks broke the school single-season rushing record with, as it turned out, some timely running in the final minute of the regular-season finale against University.

Barry Faulkner COSTA MESA - C.J. Zuniga, an All-CIF Southern Section Division IX running back as a Costa Mesa High junior in 1999, will not compete for the Mustangs' football team this fall, due to academic ineligibility, Coach Jerry Howell confirmed Tuesday. Zuniga, a 5-foot-10, 185-pound tailback who transferred to Mesa from Arizona just before fall practice last season, rushed for 2,015 yards and scored 28 touchdowns. He amassed 2,498 all-purpose yards and also had two interceptions in limited defensive duty to help the Mustangs earn a share of the Pacific Coast League championship, reach the playoffs for a school-record fourth straight season, and finish 8-3. In addition to All-CIF recognition, Zuniga was the Daily Pilot's Pacific Coast League MVP, the PCL coaches' Offensive Player of the Year and the Offensive Player of the Year on the All-Newport-Mesa District Dream Team.
