Deirdre Newman Kathy Paul seems like the most relaxed employee at the fair. You can find her sitting inside the cool Millennium Barn, one bare foot on each pedal of a spinning wheel. A small crowd usually gathers around her, watching her contentedly spin wool as part of the Sheepy Hollow attraction. The exhibit features spinning and felting demonstrations and a variety of colorful wool products like hats, scarfs and rugs. Paul, who lives in Vermont, came out to California six weeks early for her daughter's wedding.

We nabbed super-duper estate saleswoman Alison McCormick, dragged her away from her business partner Scott Reed -- and at least three multimillion-dollar estate listing inquiries -- and insisted that she model the fall and winter fashions from Neiman Marcus, Fashion Island, to help the perfectly dressed female executive make the perfect deal before the holidays. McCormick and Reed have recently signed with the new Strada Properties of Newport Beach.

Dunhill originally launched in England in the late 19th century as a company offering luxury accessories to the automobile enthusiast. Times have changed and the company is now in the midst of a global relaunch. The South Coast Plaza location will mark the first of its kind in the United States. Future plans include a new store on Fifth Avenue in New York, followed by new concept stores in Los Angeles and Chicago. Unafraid to celebrate the classic, the new Dunhill offers products that encompass the full range of men's fashion, including ready-to-wear, accessories, leather goods, watches, pens, lighters, gifts, games and more.

Stains seem to have a fatal attraction to the carpet in my house. As soon as new carpet arrives, marking pens jump to the floor faster, tar seems to stick to the bottom of feet longer and injuries bleed more profusely. Although I am rarely the perpetrator of the disasters, cleanup seems to fall into my job description. Or maybe I am the only one that cares if the carpets are clean? I'm sure the latest carpet incarnation at the Wight House will suffer the fate of that which has gone before.

With cold February feet, we opted to check in this week with longtime family business Hemphill’s Rugs & Carpets, which offers excellent prices and service on flooring products. Could you give us a short history of your company? Hemphill’s Rugs & Carpets was started in 1995. We offer more than 70 name brands of carpet, area rugs, wood floor and specialty flooring items. Owner Brett Hemphill spent six-plus years in Williamsburg, Va., as general manager of a start-up discount flooring business that was a spin-off from a large discount furniture store, after graduating from USC. ANDREW GLAZER My credentials for judging a livestock fashion show Wednesday night were fairly limited. For starters, I didn't know what the hay a livestock fashion show was. But it was nice to doff my journalistic objectivity for an evening, breathe sawdust and judge contestants and their sheep on their clothing, behavior and poise. The "Lads and Lassies Contest," I learned, was sponsored by wool farmers and designed to showcase wool clothing.

A purl of knitting wisdom: Sometimes the pattern chooses the yarn and, other times, the yarn chooses the pattern. "It's a magical experience," said Jennifer Nimmrichter, owner of Suzoo's Wool Works, where towers of bright, rainbow-hued bundles obscure nearly every inch of wall space. When Nimmrichter took over her mom's knitting business in 2009, she found that it was time for a new pattern. The store was downsized from 2,400 square feet to about 900, and with the help of friend Joie Phillips, more classes and workshops were added to the line-up to transform the business into a true fiber arts studio, she said.

The Costa Mesa City Council's proposed charter amendment is just another attempt to force its self-interested political agenda on the city. If there is anything we have learned since the council first attempted to lay off half the city's employees, it's that the council majority will do anything, and say anything, to advance its political agenda. Now we see the next phase includes a deeper and more problematic threat to our community than the last scheme did. Mayor Pro Tem Jim Righeimer and his cronies on the council want to rewrite the city's laws so they can make an unchecked end-run to grab more power and put their political agenda ahead of the community's priorities.

High fashion for the holiday's comes from Celine at South Coast Plaza. Since 1945, Celine, an international fashion house, has been associated with luxurious and high-quality clothing worn by many of the world's best-dressed women. The Celine saga began with the creation of a unique line of shoes, followed by a ready-to-wear collection that captured world attention created at its Paris headquarters. In 1997, international designer Michael Kors was named as chief Celine designer for the ready-to-wear collection, and by 1999 Kors assumed the overall responsibility as creative director.
