Alex Moore is the football player who makes all the calls for the Corona del Mar High defense. When the play ends, the middle linebacker most of the time is the reason why. You can usually find Moore near the ball, on top of whoever is carrying it. The junior has made 128 tackles in 12 games this year. Some at CdM believed the number of tackles in a season ranks No. 1 in the school's history. Moore isn't close to the 167-tackle record set by John Katovsich 24 years ago. What Moore and Katovsich do have in common is being in the same position, playing linebacker and being involved in the program's pursuit of consecutive CIF Southern Section titles.

GARDEN GROVE - "Chase the ring" is the chant for the Corona del Mar High football team as the players exit their postgame huddle. The Sea Kings are now just a game away from playing for their second straight ring. They withstood an inspired effort from Los Amigos in the first half of Friday night's CIF Southern Section Southern Division quarterfinal playoff game. In the second half, CdM looked like the top-seeded defending champion that it is. The Sea Kings pulled away, blanking the Lobos, 26-0, at Bolsa Grande High.

Newsflash - Woodbridge High has a good cross country program. OK, so maybe it's not news that Woodbridge's boys' and girls' teams once again are expected to be the teams to beat for the Pacific Coast League titles. But this year it's a little different at the top. Warriors coach George Varvas has stepped down to an assistant's role to create an opportunity for new head coach Bryan Pacheco. "It's exciting for me," said Pacheco, 37. "I enjoy cross country, I enjoy working with the kids and running with the kids.
