FRESNO - The Orange Coast College cross country programs capped off a solid season with a pair of top-five team finishes at the California Community College State Meet, held at Woodward Park Saturday. For the OCC women, the Pirates were topped only by state powerhouse Glendale and finished second overall with 115 points. The Vaqueros (30 points) used four top-10 performances to run away with the state title. Leading the OCC team was sophomore standout Analicia Silva, who used the near-perfect conditions to rip through the 5K course with a fourth-place time of 18 minutes, 21.68 seconds, just 22 seconds off of the championship pace, set by Glendale's Karen Rosas (17:59.61)

Annual Women's Sailing Convention, which brings women into the sport, takes place Saturday at the Bahia Corinthian Yacht Club in Corona del Mar. Sailing is no longer a sport dominated by men, and each year hundreds of women descend on the Bahia Corinthian Yacht Club to prove it. On Saturday, the 2006 Annual Women's Sailing Convention will arrive at the Corona del Mar yacht club. The sellout event is a day when women sailors teach others just about everything there is to know about sailing.

ALTA LOMA - The Orange Coast College women's basketball team lost to Riverside, 75-50, in the consolation championship game of the Chaffey Tournament Sunday. OCC sophomore Nadia Mojica, who had nine rebounds and seven points, was named all-tournament, while Karyn Fierst and Newport Harbor High product Kristin Urban chipped in Sunday with 15 and 10 points, respectively. OCC (1-2) defeated Hancock. 60-57, Saturday, behind 17 points from Kyra Melville.

Spurgeon NEWPORT-MESA -- Orange Coast College President Margaret Gratton and environmental activist Jean Watt were named this year's Women of Distinction by the Girl Scout Council of Orange County. The women will be honored at a luncheon set for 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. April 5 at the Irvine Marriott. The Girl Scouts of America national president will be on hand to deliver the awards. "The Women of Distinction award annually recognizes women whose professional achievements and personal success exemplify the values of the Girl Scouts," said Christine Shingleton, the Orange County Council president.

COSTA MESA - Five players scored in double figures as host Vanguard University beat up on Lawrence University from Wisconsin for a 105-41 nonconference women's basketball victory Monday night. Laura Lee (15 points), Erin Edmiston and Kelly Boeke (13 apiece), Rachel Fikse (12) and Becki Huddle (11) led the way offensively for the Lions, who had 12 players score. Vanguard (6-2) led, 50-20, at halftime and upped the lead to 63 by shooting nearly 66% in the second half (21 of 32)

Orange Coast College is hosting a day for women to spend time with their peers in reflection. The college is putting on an one-day community education retreat, "Women in Transition Summer Retreat," from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. July 23 in OCC's Student Center Lounge, 2701 Fairview Road, Costa Mesa. Women will participate in activities, discussions and writings to better understand themselves and make decisions. The retreat is $99 a person and includes snacks. Participants should bring sack lunches.
