Last year, the wine industry in the country contributed over $160 billion to the economy, according to a study by MKF Research LLC in Napa Valley. The enormous popularity of wine could be from its recently celebrated health benefits, local wine aficionados said. But how does one become a wine expert, or just more savvy? It's all about tasting. "I think for beginners, it's really important to go wine tasting, whether it's at Wine Styles or any other place with a wine bar," Costa Mesa's Wine Styles manager Jennifer Keefe said.

Deep teal-colored glass mosaic tiles cascade down the walls and soft waterfalls trickle over sleek TV screens behind the bar of Newport Beach's newest fine-dining establishment, which had its first official dinner service Tuesday evening. Blue Coral Seafood & Spirits hosted 120 reservations in Newport Center on Tuesday, after more than a year of construction, design and training. Specializing in simple, but elegant, seafood dishes, the restaurant went through a rigorous process choosing suppliers that had to pass a litany of guidelines to make the cut, said Michael Doctulero, a Culinary Partner at the restaurant.

Island seafood A new eatery described as an upscale seafood restaurant is poised to replace the Hard Rock Cafe at Fashion Island. A release issued by Outback Steakhouse Inc. spokeswoman Stephanie Amberg said the restaurant would be called Blue Coral Seafood & Wine, a joint venture between Outback and Paul Fleming, who co-developed Fleming's Prime Steakhouse & Wine Bar. Hard Rock Cafe closed in June. The new restaurant is expected to open early next year.
