Four Vanguard University players scored in double figures, but it wasn't enough as the Lions fell to host Westmont College, 91-69, in a Golden State Athletic Conference men's basketball game Saturday. Shane McKim scored a team-high 15 points, followed by Damion Morbley (13), Leviticus Williamson (12) and Josh Pierson (11). Vanguard trailed, 44-25, at halftime and never recovered. The Lions (12-11, 8-6 in the GSAC) committed 24 turnovers to Westmont's 10. COSTA MESA - The Vanguard women's soccer team, which finished third in the Golden State Atletic Conference, earned a No. 3 seed in the NAIA Region II Regional Tournament and will host a first-round game Saturday. The Lions, who face No. 6 Notre Dame de Namur, completed the regular season Saturday with a 9-7 overall record and a third-place finish in GSAC, at 7-3. The NAIA Region II playoffs will also include Azusa Pacific (#1), Westmont College (#2)

SANTA BARBARA - Vanguard University's baseball team lost a tough Golden State Athletic Conference matchup to host Westmont College, 3-2, Tuesday afternoon. Joshua Case (Orange Coast College) threw eight solid innings, allowing only one earned run on nine hits with four strikeouts for the Lions (4-18, 2-14 in conference). After three walks in the bottom of the 10th inning, John Whipp's two-out single brought in the winning run for Westmont (12-9, 9-6)

The Vanguard University men's basketball team, seeded seventh, lost to second-seeded host Westmont College, 62-53, in the first round of the Golden State Athletic Conference Tournament Thursday. Vanguard trailed, 34-23, after the first half, after shooting 45% from the field and making 3 of 8 three-pointers. The Lions, playing without their top two scorers Damion Morbley and Shane McKim who quit the team earlier in the week, were led by Shawn Corkery with 16 points and five assists for Vanguard.

SANTA BARBARA -- Vanguard University took sole possession of third place in the Golden State Athletic Conference with a 79-74 victory over Westmont College in men's basketball Tuesday night. The Lions (17-9, 11-5 in conference) entered the game tied with the Warriors for third place. Vanguard took a six-point lead at halftime and extended it to as many as 16 points. Horace Wormely played all 40 minutes and scored a team-high 19 points, adding six rebounds, five assists and three steals.

COSTA MESA - Lindsay Doyal and Megan Godfrey won alone and together for the Vanguard University women's tennis team in Friday's 6-3 nonconference loss to Western New Mexico University. Doyal won, 6-1, 6-2, while Godfrey prevailed, 6-4, 6-4 in singles' competition for Vanguard (0-7). The Lions' duo teamed up for an 8-6 win on the doubles' side. The Lions will resume Golden State Athletic Conference action March 11 at noon with a home contest against Westmont College.

COSTA MESA - Orange Coast College men's basketball coach Steve Spencer has added another coach to his staff, hiring Scott Coopman as an assistant, Spencer announced Saturday. Coopman, 28, comes to Coast after a five-year stint as an assistant at Westmont College in Santa Barbara. He graduated from UC Irvine with a degree in social ecology. At Westmont, he coached on the staff of John Moore, who has compiled a 93-34 record over the past four years. "Any time you've worked under a great coach, as Scott has with Coach Moore, you're going to know a thing or two about basketball," Spencer said.

COSTA MESA - The Vanguard University baseball team swept visiting Westmont in a doubleheader, Saturday, improving to 4-2 in the Golden State Athletic Conference. The Lions (12-5 overall) opened with a 7-4 victory as Anthony Walker pitched his fourth complete game of the season to earn his fourth win. Vanguard right-fielder Samuel Baeder went 3 for 4 with one RBI, while Chad Chop and Jeremy Isherwood added two hits each. Pitchers Ryan Williams, Josh Franco and Garold Shaffer guided the Lions to a 5-1 victory in the nightcap.

The Lions (14-14, 7-11 in conference) slugged three home runs in the opener and scored three runs in the 10th inning to win the second game. In the first game, Matt Voorhies, Erik Komatsu and Luke Iverson belted home runs. Iverson went 2 for 3 and drove in a game-high three RBI. Randy Smith had three hits and Jason Machado added two hits and an RBI for the Lions.

COLLEGE MEN'S BASKETBALL: Vanguard University held 21st-ranked Westmont College to 20 points in the second half, but fell, 54-39, to the 16-6 Warriors in a defensive Golden State Athletic Conference basketball battle at the Pit on the Vanguard campus. Westmont College took a 34-14 lead into intermission after holding Vanguard to 22% shooting from the field in the first 20 minutes. The Warriors made 14 of 29 from the field to earn the 20-point edge as Chris Clark supplied 10 pints for the offense and Kevien Blomstrom grabbed six first-half rebounds.

It may have been two teams straddling the middle of the road in the Golden State Athletic Conference, but the women's volleyball units from No. 16-ranked Westmont College and host Vanguard University, ranked No. 18, are also among the top NAIA programs in the country. Perhaps fittingly, the road to success for the victorious Lions on Tuesday night was funneling their offense as close to dead center as possible. Sophomore middle blockers Sarah McKinny and Stephanie Flores combined for more than half of Vanguard's kills to key a 16-25, 25-21, 25-13, 25-18 GSAC triumph that lifts the Lions (14-5, 3-3 in conference)

The Vanguard University men's soccer team will look to keep its playoff hopes alive with a 3 p.m. Golden State Athletic Conference contest at Westmont College in Santa Barbara. The Lions (8-4-1, 5-1-1 in GSAC) are in second place in conference play, while Westmont (14-3, 5-2), ranked No. 8 in the NAIA polls, remains close behind. Vanguard trails second-ranked Azusa Pacific by only one game and with only two games remaining, every contest is important.
