WESTMINSTER - Sophomore right link Allison McKenzie scored three goals and added two assists for Newport Harbor High's field hockey team Thursday as the visiting Sailors hammered Westminster, 9-1, in Sunset League action. Elizabeth Evans, a junior, and Nicole Dore, a senior, each two twice for Newport Harbor (1-0), which led at halftime, 6-0, in the season opener. The Sailors will participate Saturday in the Los Angeles Field Hockey Association Allied Sports Day and play a series of "mini games," according to Coach Sharon Wolfe.

WESTMINSTER - Corona del Mar High senior Kevin Hansen scored 22 points in three quarters, then sat back and watched his teammates hold on for a 62-44 nonleague boys basketball victory at Westminster Wednesday. Hansen added eight rebounds and three steals to help CdM, ranked No. 4 in CIF Southern Section Division III-AA, improve to 17-6. CdM senior Brooks Morris added 11 points and senior Elliott Patterson chipped in six points and eight boards off the bench.

Sophomore center Alisa Carrillo scored 22 points and sophomore guard Amy Shaw added 12 points and three assists as the defending state champion Orange Coast College women's basketball team opened the season with a 60-44 victory over L.A. Valley on Friday in the first round of the Mount San Antonio College tournament. Jessica Chades chipped in with three assists and six points for OCC, which plays the winner of Mt. SAC-Southwestern at 7 p.m. tonight.

Assemblyman Van Tran has invited volunteers and other local residents to a reception in the Little Saigon Outreach Headquarters in Westminster today, encouraging his constituents to enjoy drinks and snacks while cheering on their favorite candidate as the results roll in. Tran has run a Republican neighborhood precinct operation in the headquarters, which has been organizing on behalf of presidential hopeful John McCain. “I think because there is a dearth of events for the presidential primary that it would be nice to have a nice opportunity to get together,” Tran said.

Sasha Grumman and Lara Schilling both scored single goals and that was all the Newport Harbor High field hockey team needed to defeat host Bonita, 2-0, Tuesday. Grumman and Schilling, both juniors, scored their goals off penalty corners in front of the Sailors' new head coach, Kristy Cross. Senior goalkeeper Ciara Lawrence stopped 10 shots in tallying her fourth straight shutout for the Sailors (4-1-2), beginning at last week's Westminster tournament.

Rick Devereux The Estancia High football team felt pretty good after its come-from-behind, 21-14, victory over Ocean View last Friday in a Golden West League contest. The euphoria lasts as long as it took to look at the schedule and see the Eagles host league-leading Westminster at 7:30 p.m. tonight at Orange Coast College. "We've got our work cut out for us," Coach Craig Fertig said. The Lions, ranked No. 9 in CIF Southern Section Division VII, are coming off a bye, but defeated Orange, 42-7, Oct. 8. Estancia lost to Orange, 23-21, Oct. 1. "This is a big game for them and for us," Fertig said.

Police and California Highway Patrol units pursued a suspected stolen vehicle into Corona del Mar on Thursday afternoon, police said. The vehicle was reportedly stolen from Anaheim in mid-October. Westminster police spotted the vehicle and began pursuing it about noon Thursday, according to Newport Beach Police Sgt. Chuck Freeman. As the vehicle traveled along a freeway, CHP joined in the pursuit. The vehicle exited and took Jamboree Road down to Coast Highway, Freeman said. The male driver fled the vehicle and was arrested by Westminster police.

Richard Dunn While Costa Mesa High's football team might be known for its smashmouth offense, there was little grunt or brawn on senior Nate Hunter's game-winning 26-yard field goal Friday night with 11 seconds left as Coach Dave Perkins' Mustangs rallied to defeat host Westminster, 11-10, in an edge-of-your-seat Golden West League game. "It's a huge win," said Hunter, mobbed by his teammates after booting a perfect kick through the uprights to give Costa Mesa its first lead.

Costa Mesa High senior Sharon Day scored two goals and added three assists to lead the Mustangs girls soccer team to a 5-0 Golden West League victory over visiting Ocean View Wednesday. "She just owned that game," said Mesa Coach Dan Johnston, whose team improved to 15-1-2, 9-0-0 in league and needs one win to clinch the Golden West title. Day scored twice in the first half, off assists from her younger sister Jasmin, and junior teammate Stacy Krikorian.
