A family member on Wednesday described the man who authorities said jumped from a helicopter mid-flight as a smart and very private person who suffered from health problems near the end of his life. Officials have said they are treating the Tuesday death of Gregory McFadden, 61, as a suicide. McFadden suffered for many years from a medical problem that made it hard for him to sleep well or eat properly, said one of McFadden's three brothers, Bradley, a West Covina lawyer and the city's former mayor with whom he lived for five years.

The road to musical literacy is long, and for some at the Segerstrom Center for the Arts on Monday night, it may have begun with Laura Harrison's fingers. Harrison, a music educator and classical and jazz vocalist, led a class of about 30 adults in a small, brightly lit rehearsal room. The subject of the class was reading sheet music, and the participants, who would perform alongside the Pacific Chorale in less than a week, began with a crash course in rhythm. "You hear that?"

If one at-bat summed up Danny Moskovits’ senior year at Corona del Mar High, the last one coming in the Sea Kings’ final victory is the best way to tell it. Go back to May 29. The Sea Kings are in a tight CIF Southern Section Division III quarterfinal playoff baseball game on the road in Hacienda Heights. Los Altos is behind by one run in the top of the sixth. Moskovits steps to the plate with runners on. An extra-base hit here and CdM is bound for its first semifinal appearance since 2004.

Newport Harbor High’s Josh George is still alive — even if it didn’t turn out the way he wanted it to Saturday. The senior is the lone Newport-Mesa-District wrestler advancing to the CIF Southern Section Masters Meet at Carter High in Rialto Friday. George will be making his third straight trip to the event after placing third at the Southern Section Coastal Divisional individual tournament at Marina High Saturday. “He was bummed when he left,” Newport Harbor Coach Dominic Bulone said after George barely missed the finals by losing, 5-4, to senior Daniel Diaz of John Glenn of Norwalk in the semifinals.
