To say that Luca Cupido provided memorable moments this year for the Newport Harbor High boys' water polo team would be a bit of an understatement. Cupido, a senior transfer from Italy, always seemed to be turning heads on the Sailors' pool deck. Two plays specifically come to mind. There was the penalty shot lob of Mater Dei's 6-foot-8 senior goalkeeper McQuin Baron in the final of the South Coast Tournament. And there was the backhand shot from mid-tank that went in at the buzzer, accentuating the Sailors' 13-7 win over Huntington Beach in a battle for first place in the Sunset League.

A young Costa Mesa High girls' water polo team is even younger right now. The Mustangs have both of their senior starters out due to injury. The inexperience showed Wednesday night in the Lil' Pickle Classic tournament that Costa Mesa hosts each year. The Mustangs fell to Tesoro, 15-2, at their home pool after beating Etiwanda, 6-2, in their tournament opener. Costa Mesa (6-7) finished second in Pool B of the 15-team tournament. Coach Tim Postiff's club will play in a fifth-place semifinal match at 11 a.m. Saturday, back at Costa Mesa.

When does one stop using adjectives like "young" and "inexperienced" to describe a team? That time already may have passed for the Corona del Mar High girls' water polo team. Other CIF Southern Section Division 1 squads better start using words like "contender. " CdM returns just two regular contributors from last year's Division 1 championship team, senior center Marina Coskinas and sophomore utility Maddie Musselman. But the Sea Kings showed their depth to earn a 7-5 victory over rival Newport Harbor on Friday night at CdM in the Battle of the Bay game.

SANTA ANA - Kaleigh Gilchrist is about seven months removed from winning the top prize in college women's water polo. Last May, the Newport Harbor High alumna helped USC win the NCAA Division 1 title. But now, Gilchrist is playing at an even higher level. Last weekend she played in her first tournament with the U.S. senior women's national team, and Team USA won gold at the Canada Cup. This week Gilchrist, a senior at USC, is continuing play with the senior national team at the Holiday Cup at Foothill High.

Chris Oeding, a former star at Corona del Mar High, was named Coach of the Year on the men's water polo All-Southern California selections released recently. Oeding, a two-time Olympian who was CIF Southern Section Player of the Year and a three-time All-American for the Sea Kings, guided Long Beach City College to the state championship with an 11-9 title-game triumph over two-time-defending state champion Golden West. Oeding, in his 14th season at the Vikings' helm, has now won three state titles.

IRVINE - The last instructions Newport Harbor High boys' water polo coach Robert Lynn gave to his team coming out of halftime were crystal clear. "Keep it under control, guys," Lynn told his players as they waited along the lane line. "Keep covering back. Take their counter away. " For the better part of three quarters, the Sailors indeed were able to take away Studio City Harvard-Westlake's counterattack in Wednesday night's CIF Southern Section Division 1 semifinal match. But then Harvard-Westlake junior Johnny Hooper got free for a goal with two seconds left in the third quarter.

In the first half on Saturday, the Corona del Mar High boys' water polo team did not give an inch. The underdog Sea Kings were playing inspired defense in their home pool, killing off five-on-six after five-on-six. They also were stepping up offensively, surprising Mater Dei senior goalkeeper McQuin Baron — who Coach Chris Segesman calls the best high school goalie in the nation — with creative plays and sweep shots. CdM was simply competing. These were two heavyweights going blow for blow.

Matt Sherburne grew up playing basketball and baseball, but his father Rick always wanted him to try water polo. Rick was certainly successful in the water. He played water polo for Sunny Hills High and UCLA in the 1970s. While in Westwood, he was part of the Bruins' 1979 national finalist team, and he earned all-NCAA Tournament honors. Matt was fine with trying out water polo. He got his feet wet, so to speak, in the seventh grade with longtime Coach Ted Bandaruk. Matt grew to love water polo.
