Costa Mesa High junior Lauren Smith likes to be a team player in girls' water polo, setting up her teammates. When needed, though, she definitely can take matters into her own hands. When the ball left Smith's hand on Wednesday, it usually went right into the back of the net. She scored a career-high nine goals to help the Mustangs breeze past Estancia, 14-4, in the Battle for the Bell game at Costa Mesa High. Costa Mesa has never lost the bell game to Estancia in girls' water polo.

Newport Harbor High senior girls' water polo player Heidi Fults can't seem to stay away from the water. It makes sense when one considers her family. Her mother, Suzanne, was a sailor growing up, while her father, Greg, was a water polo player. Heidi's older brothers Kyle and Cory also both played water sports during their time at Newport Harbor, water polo for Kyle and surfing and outrigger paddling for Cory. 'We're definitely all the water," said Heidi Fults, who enjoys taking trips to Catalina as often as possible aboard the Fults' sailboat, "Lemuria.

Corona del Mar High girls' water polo coach Ross Sinclair was greeted by Jason Lynch following Wednesday afternoon's nonleague game against Foothill. Lynch, an assistant coach with Foothill, is the former Newport Harbor High boys' water polo coach. He coached Sinclair during his playing days with the Sailors. "I'm trying to teach these girls about playing the game mentally, being a student of the game," Sinclair said. "I learned that from [Lynch]. I think I naturally have it, but I also learned more of it from him. Preparing is so crucial.

Newport Harbor High girls' water polo coach Bill Barnett only needed two fingers to count the positives after Wednesday night's Sunset League opener against Edison. Number one, Barnett praised the play of junior goalkeeper Carlee Kapana. She played the whole game and made seven saves as senior Cleo Harrington, with whom Kapana usually splits time, was out sick. Number two, Barnett was happy that his team earned the 3-1 victory at home. Other than that? "Other than that we stunk, especially on offense," Barnett said.

A shocking development took place Saturday afternoon at Newport Harbor High. For the first time in three years, the Newport Harbor and Corona del Mar girls' water polo teams did not meet each other in a high school tournament. The teams that have met in the CIF Southern Section Division 1 title match the last two years did not face off in this weekend's Holiday Cup. Yet the Sailors and Sea Kings each found positives to the first tournament of their season, after winning three out of four games.

RANCHO SANTA MARGARITA - Corona del Mar High sophomore Maddie Musselman managed to score a key goal, get a key steal and frustrate her head coach - all within the final minute of the game. The first two actions were key in helping the Sea Kings earn an 8-6 victory over host Santa Margarita in the Holiday Cup quarterfinals on Friday. Even the third ended up providing a unifying moment for the Sea Kings. Musselman dumped the ball with seven seconds left on the shot clock. CdM Coach Ross Sinclair, who ended up a bit aggravated by this, said after the game that she was looking at the scoreboard and saw a "one," which she thought indicated the shot clock but actually indicated that CdM had one timeout left.

Matt Komer doesn't hesitate when he talks about his wife, Jaime. He jumps at the question, asking about her style when it comes to working as a yoga instructor. "She is very inviting to all levels," Komer says of his wife. "She can work with young girls and older athletes. She is very patient when teaching newcomers. She's open to adjusting each person and talking them through a certain pose … with the background she has it can be intimidating but once they get in the class she is very welcoming.
