IRVINE - The Newport Harbor High girls' water polo team played Laguna Beach four times this season, saving the best for last. The Sailors did not roll over in Saturday afternoon's CIF Southern Section Division 1 title match. They came out aggressive and pushed the Breakers like few teams have this season. Newport Harbor badly wanted its sixth Division 1 title. But Makenzie Fischer helped deliver Laguna Beach its first. The junior had five goals and five steals as the top-seeded Breakers won, 10-7, at Woollett Aquatics Center.

Getting three sevens can be enough to win a sizable amount of money on a slot machine in Las Vegas. For the Newport Harbor High girls' water polo team, three upset wins as the No. 7 seed equals the jackpot. The Sailors indeed entered the CIF Southern Section Division 1 playoffs as the No. 7 seed after late-season losses to Foothill, Corona del Mar and Los Alamitos. But after beating No. 2 Foothill, 5-4, in the quarterfinals and No. 6 Santa Barbara, 11-10, in the semifinals, the Sailors find themselves in the Division 1 title match for the third straight year.

After a hot shooting start, Newport Harbor High junior Ellie Reid hit the wall about halfway through the girls' water polo season. The left-hander was battling fatigue, sickness and a nagging shoulder injury. She stopped scoring as many goals, not looking as confident with her shot. "I kind of lost my groove a little bit," Reid said. "I kind of cracked a little bit in midseason. " How did Ellie get her groove back? It took just one shot on Saturday. She scored the winning six-on-five goal with 2:24 left off a pass from Kate Pipkin, helping Newport Harbor upset Foothill, 5-4, in a CIF Southern Section Division 1 quarterfinal match Saturday at Newport Harbor High.

The last time that the Corona del Mar High girls' water polo team played Santa Barbara, CdM sophomore Maddie Musselman burned the Dons. She scored five goals in the Irvine Southern California Championships quarterfinal game Feb. 7, matching Santa Barbara's total by herself. Santa Barbara Coach Mark Walsh dedicated more defensive attention to Musselman in the second meeting Saturday, in a CIF Southern Section Division 1 quarterfinal game at CdM. Musselman still almost killed the Dons.

Costa Mesa High girls' water polo coach Tim Postiff and senior Devon Christensen both used the word "youth" after the game. The Mustangs' youth provides hope for the future, but it also was their undoing Tuesday evening in a CIF Southern Section Division 1 wild-card game. Visiting Woodbridge jumped out to an early lead and posted a 16-4 victory at Costa Mesa High, ending Costa Mesa's season. Sophomore Shawna Kedzie paced the Warriors (13-10) with five goals, all in the first half.

In and out of the pool, Corona del Mar High senior Bobbi Hoose is affected by tremors in her hands and arms. Hoose, a senior captain for the CdM girls' water polo team, has dealt with her condition of having essential familiar tremors her whole life. "It always happens," she said. "I can't hold coffee, and it's hard for me to write sometimes ... I don't think about it in the game. " In the game, the tremors sometimes make it difficult for her to make fast movements. But visiting Santa Margarita couldn't tell the difference Wednesday in a key nonleague game at CdM. Hoose led CdM with three goals as the Sea Kings edged the Eagles, 8-7. Corona del Mar (22-4)
