The Los Alamitos High girls' water polo team seemed to be full of surprises Wednesday night. Coach Dave Carlson surprised some at the game, publicly saying for the first time that he plans to step down as Griffins girls' coach after 15 years. In the water, the Griffins also surprised host Newport Harbor by staying in a hard press defense virtually the whole time. And Los Alamitos used it to produce another surprise, a 6-5 upset victory that gives the Griffins their first Sunset League title in three seasons.

IRVINE - The Newport Harbor High girls' water polo team played Laguna Beach four times this season, saving the best for last. The Sailors did not roll over in Saturday afternoon's CIF Southern Section Division 1 title match. They came out aggressive and pushed the Breakers like few teams have this season. Newport Harbor badly wanted its sixth Division 1 title. But Makenzie Fischer helped deliver Laguna Beach its first. The junior had five goals and five steals as the top-seeded Breakers won, 10-7, at Woollett Aquatics Center.

Not many coaches have a track record like Corona del Mar High girls' water polo coach Aaron Chaney. Chaney has coached the Sea Kings for five full years. Over those five years, CdM has accumulated a 124-31 record that would make Phil Jackson blush. And, for five consecutive years, Corona del Mar has held up the CIF championship hardware at the end of the season. "I feel fortunate," Chaney said. "I've got a good group of kids who work hard and are dedicated. They make sacrifices to the team and work hard."

RANCHO SANTA MARGARITA - Corona del Mar High sophomore Maddie Musselman managed to score a key goal, get a key steal and frustrate her head coach - all within the final minute of the game. The first two actions were key in helping the Sea Kings earn an 8-6 victory over host Santa Margarita in the Holiday Cup quarterfinals on Friday. Even the third ended up providing a unifying moment for the Sea Kings. Musselman dumped the ball with seven seconds left on the shot clock. CdM Coach Ross Sinclair, who ended up a bit aggravated by this, said after the game that she was looking at the scoreboard and saw a "one," which she thought indicated the shot clock but actually indicated that CdM had one timeout left.
