Turning a dream into reality is seldom a smooth course. That's what members of the Afghanistan National Water Polo Team are learning in their quixotic quest to come to the United States to train and prepare for their unlikely bid to compete in the Olympics. When I wrote about the team last fall, plans were underway for a visit to Southern California so players could learn from the deep reservoir of water polo talent in the region. Their itinerary was to include a lengthy stopover in Newport Beach, where they planned to practice at the Corona del Mar High School pool, and learn from local players and coaches.

Cue the heart-stirring music, and imagine the following set-up: An adversity-stricken group of young people from an impoverished, war-ravaged nation yearns for a source of meaning and accomplishment for themselves, and a point of pride for their countrymen. An idealistic military man from a far-off land dedicates himself to bringing the group together and giving wing to its unlikely dream. Half a world away, another military man hears of the intrepid group, and rallies a community to lend support.

There were several valuable lessons to learn for young athletes at a water polo clinic at Costa Mesa Aquatic Center Saturday afternoon. There so many messages to keep tucked away, or perhaps write them down, stick them onto a wall. Some of the advice coming from Olympians Courtney Mathewson and Shea Buckner really stuck out. Mathewson wanted the young players to believe in themselves. Self-confidence can be the most important asset for any person in any profession, she said.

In February, Marina Coskinas helped the Corona del Mar High girls' water polo team win its first CIF Southern Section Division 1 title in program history. Last weekend, she committed to the defending NCAA Division 1 champions. Call it a win-win situation for Coskinas, a senior center who said Wednesday night that she has verbally committed to play water polo at USC next year. "I went on an official visit a few weeks ago, and I really liked how everything was very organized," said Coskinas, who plans to be a pre-med student at USC. "The whole idea of the Trojan family was very appealing to me. " Coskinas will be a prominent returning player this winter for a young CdM team.

The Costa Mesa Aquatics Club youth water polo team went three for three to win the Northwood tournament. CMAC continues to make a name for itself in the youth club scene with victories over SOCAL, United and San Clemente Saturday. In the Northwood summer series the young club faced tough opponents in each of its games and played to win, and win it did. In the first game of the tournament CMAC faced SOCAL, one of the top clubs in Orange County. The CMAC team had a special-guest coach in two-time Olympian Jeff Campbell, who was on the U.S. Olympic Water polo team in Seoul, Korea in 1988 when it won the silver medal and again in Barcelona, Spain in 1992 when Team USA finished fourth.

Estancia High did not need to look far to fill its girls' water polo coach opening. The Eagles have turned to a program alumna, someone who has already been an Estancia swimming assistant coach for the past three years. Amber Peters has been hired as Estancia's girls' water polo coach, girls' Athletic Director Jessica Perry confirmed. Peters, who played at set in high school, was a four-year varsity player for the Eagles before graduating in 2009. In her junior and senior years she played under former coach Jennifer Broderick, who resigned in April after six seasons.

A young Costa Mesa High girls' water polo team is even younger right now. The Mustangs have both of their senior starters out due to injury. The inexperience showed Wednesday night in the Lil' Pickle Classic tournament that Costa Mesa hosts each year. The Mustangs fell to Tesoro, 15-2, at their home pool after beating Etiwanda, 6-2, in their tournament opener. Costa Mesa (6-7) finished second in Pool B of the 15-team tournament. Coach Tim Postiff's club will play in a fifth-place semifinal match at 11 a.m. Saturday, back at Costa Mesa.
