WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL Northwestern (Iowa) def. Vanguard SIOUX CITY, Iowa — The Lions had their season ended in their final pool-play match at the NAIA Tournament, falling, 25-18, 25-19, 25-27, 25-16, on Thursday. The Lions, who were 0-3 in pool play, finish 22-9. Northwestern improves to 36-3 and is one of two teams to advance out of the four-team pool. Jessica Chase and Rachael Barker had 13 kills each for Vanguard, while Carla Cantarella had 23 assists.

MEN'S SOCCER Vanguard 3, Soka 0 ALISO VIEJO - Jesus Fregoso scored in the 11th minute and the visiting Lions were off and running in the nonconference match on Thursday night. Angel Maldonado and Noah Cook also scored for Vanguard (4-2), for which Juan Arellano added an assist. Luca Licciardi had four saves to preserve the shutout. Soka is 5-3.

BASEBALL Doubleheader SANTA CLARITA — Alec Rosales had a pinch-double to drive in the game-winning run in the top of the ninth inning of the visiting Lions' 3-2 win over The Master's in the first of two Golden State Athletic Conference contests Thursday. TMC prevailed, 14-1, in the second game as Vanguard's record is now 18-16, 8-14 in conference. David Kiriakos had two hits and one run batted in in the first game, in which Vanguard teammate J.T. Truhett was two for four.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL Vanguard 77, Concordia 57 IRVINE - Nicole Ballestero had 27 points, six rebounds, five assists and three steals for the Lions in the Golden State Athletic Conference game Tuesday. Alison Drennan had 14 points, 10 rebounds and four assists, Samantha Doucette scored 10 points and Esther Timmermans had nine points and 13 rebounds for Vanguard (13-1, 4-1 in conference), ranked No. 3 in the NAIA. Concordia is 4-13, 2-3.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL Vanguard 61, Cal State San Marcos 47 OCEANSIDE — Junior Nicole Ballestero had 20 points and six assists to pace the visiting Lions in the nonconference game Tuesday at MiraCosta College. Ballastero added six rebounds and three steals to help the No. 4-ranked Lions improve to 3-0. Senior Esther Timmermans had 14 rebounds to go with her eight points, while senior Chelsea Alfafara made three three-pointers on her way to 11 points and freshman Samantha Doucette had 10 points for the winners.

Vanguard University senior forward Jordan Davidson has been named Golden State Athletic Conference Co-Player of the Year to highlight four Lions named to the all-conference team in women's soccer. Davidson, the GSAC Player of the Year and a first-team NAIA All-American as a junior after transferring from a community college in Arizona, has 11 goals and seven assists for the No. 11-ranked Lions, who take a 15-3 record into Thursday's GSAC Tournament semifinal at Westmont. Senior Kayla Arenas, who leads the Lions with 14 goals and six assists, made the team as a forward, while junior midfielder Jen Martin and sophomore defender Ashley McCutcheon are the other Vanguard honorees.

Vanguard sophomore Nina Pudar earned second-team All-American recognition in women's tennis. She helped lead the Lions to the second round of the NAIA National Championship. Vanguard University senior Taylor Belmont was named Golden State Athletic Conference Player of the Week in women's basketball after leading the top-ranked Lions to two conference wins last week. The 5-foot-5 point guard posted a triple-double in a home win over Biola on Saturday, after producing a double-double in a win over San Diego Christian on Jan. 14. She had 14 points, 14 assists and 10 rebounds in the 87-32 trouncing of Biola, in which she did not commit a turnover. In the 103-58 rout at San Diego Christian, she had 22 points and 13 assists.

The Vanguard University women's soccer team is ranked No. 2 in the NAIA coaches' poll for the second straight week. The Lions (5-0) moved up two spots and received four first-place votes to match the highest ranking in program history last week. The Lions were also ranked No. 2 last season. Vanguard ranks among the top 10 nationally in major offensive categories. Lindsey Wilson of Kentucky is ranked No. 1. The Lions beat No. 17-ranked William Carey University, 3-2, in Orange Beach, Ala. on Friday.

During an often-tense public hearing Tuesday night, one reminiscent of the contentious 2012 election season that included its own charter debate, the battle lines for and against another proposed charter for Costa Mesa materialized. On one end were supporters of the constitution-like document, contending that it will save taxpayers millions, institute more-reliable home rule than what Sacramento provides and, by and large, keep many good city policies intact. "It's not rocket science," said Mayor Pro Tem Steve Mensinger.

The Vanguard men's basketball team that won the NAIA national championship this season will be honored by the Orange County Board of Supervisors at a hosted reception on April 29 at 8:45 a.m. at the Hall of Administration in Santa Ana. An award presentation will immediately follow at 9:30. Supervisor John M.W. Moorlach, and the County of Orange will honor the Vanguard University athletes with a congratulatory proclamation for their record-breaking season. In the program's 64-season history, the 2013-14 Lions are the first to earn a Golden State Athletic Conference regular-season and tournament crown in the same season.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Vanguard University is no longer just a women's basketball power. The Costa Mesa school's men's team defeated defending NAIA champion Georgetown of Kentucky, 93-85, on Friday to reach the NAIA Division I Final Four. The Lions (30-6) will meet St. Gregory's of Oklahoma (24-9) in the semifinals on Monday at 2 p.m. PT at Municipal Auditorium. No. 6-seeded Vanguard had not advanced past the second round in its two previous NAIA Tournament appearances. But Coach Rhett Soliday's squad, which claimed the Golden State Athletic Conference regular-season and tournament championships, has won seven in a row, including three straight in Kansas City, and is the highest seeded team remaining in the 32-team tournament.

FRANKFURT, Ky. — There were only 13 combined free throws in the game, but the last one decided the outcome with two seconds left as John Brown of Arkansas upset Vanguard, 62-61, in the second round of the NAIA women's basketball tournament on Friday at the Frankfurt Civic Center. Vanguard senior Taylor Belmont converted a three-point play with 1:13 left and sophomore Samantha Doucette hit a three-pointer to pull the Lions, ranked No. 1 all season, even with 29 seconds remaining.

The Vanguard University men's basketball team made history Tuesday night, capturing its first Golden State Athletic Conference Tournament title with a pulsating 90-80 win over visiting Hope International. Senior guard Preston Wynne, the GSAC Most Valuable Player, scored 24 points, including two crowd-revving three-pointers midway through the second half, to help the GSAC champion Lions, ranked No. 9 in the NAIA, improve to 27-6. Vanguard, which won its third GSAC regular-season title this season, advances to the NAIA Tournament for the first time since 2006.

The greatest individual scoring performance in the long and distinguished history of the Vanguard University women's basketball program became something of a footnote Friday night. Despite a school-record 53 points from senior All-American and Golden State Athletic Conference Player of the Year Nicole Ballestero, the top-ranked Lions were upset, 80-76, by No. 17-ranked Hope International in the semifinals of the GSAC Tournament at Vanguard. The Royals, who were edged by Vanguard, 80-79, at home on Feb. 22 for the closest call the Lions had during their previously unbeaten season, had the final surge in a game that featured 12 lead changes and eight ties.

BASEBALL Doubleheader Host Vanguard University swept Biola in Golden State Athletic Conference play on Monday, behind the strong hitting of Thomas Mobley and a pair of quality performances from starting pitchers. Mobley went two for four with a run batted in in the 3-1 opening win and was two for three with an RBI to help the Lions post a 4-3 win in Game 2. Scott Torrey allowed just one earned run and seven hits in nine innings in Game 1 to improve to 4-1. In the second game, Richard Perry allowed one earned run and four hits in five innings, but wasn't around for the decision.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL Vanguard 82, San Diego Christian 59 Senior guard Taylor Belmont came close to producing a triple-double at home, finishing with 14 points, 10 assists and nine rebounds, as the top-ranked Lions closed out the regular season perfect on Saturday. Vanguard improved to 25-0 overall and 14-0 in the Golden State Athletic Conference. The Lions finished undefeated in conference play for the fourth time under Coach Russ Davis. Vanguard's Nicole Ballestero had 22 points, five rebounds, two assists, two blocks and two steals.

Keith Mason finished with 14 points and Chris Gorman added 12 points and six assists for No. 10-ranked Vanguard (23-6). Cal State San Marcos is 28-1. Jason Johnson connected for the game-winning layup with five seconds left for the visitors. — MEN'S TENNIS Orange Coast 9, Fullerton 0 FULLERTON — No. 1 singles player Tokunosuke Takahashi scored a 3-6 6-1, 6-2 win for the Pirates in the Orange Empire Conference match Thursday.

MEN'S BASKETBALL Vanguard 69, The Master's 61 The host Lions clinched the program's first outright Golden State Athletic Conference championship since the 1988-89 season behind 25 points from senior guard Preston Wynne on Tuesday. Wynne made five three-pointers, while junior Keith Mason chipped in 14 points and eight rebounds for No. 9-ranked Vanguard (23-5, 10-3 in conference). The Lions came in with a two-game lead with two games to go in the conference season. They have two regular-season games left, but close the GSAC campaign on Saturday at home against San Diego Christian.
