HUNTINGTON BEACH — Former Newport Harbor High product April Ross, along with Costa Mesa resident Jake Gibb and Corona del Mar resident Sean Rosenthal went undefeated Friday to move on to today’s third round at the Assn. of Volleyball Professionals Huntington Beach Open. Ross and her teammate Jen Kessy, the No. 2-seeded duo, defeated Katie Lee Carter and Sara Fredrickson in the first round, 21-11, 21-13. In the second round, Ross and Kessy beat Keao Burdine and Angela Lewis, 21-12, 21-17.

ARLINGTON, Texas — Newport Harbor High product Misty May-Treanor and partner Kerri Walsh defeated Nicole Branagh and Elaine Youngs, 21-14, 21-19, in the final Sunday to win the Assn. of Volleyball Professionals Cuervo Gold Crown Dallas Open at the Ballpark in Arlington. The win avenged a 21-19, 21-19 loss to Branagh-Youngs in the semifinals of the season-opening Miami Open last week. Branagh and Youngs went on to win that event. May-Treanor and Walsh, who won the final seven events of the 2006 AVP season, have not gone consecutive weeks without winning an AVP tour event since 2004.

TWO LOCALS ADVANCE CHARLESTON, N.C. — Top seeds Misty May-Treanor, a Newport Harbor High product, and Kerri Walsh advanced to the final four of the Assn. of Volleyball Professionals Charleston Open after defeating fifth-seeds Holly McPeak and Logan Tom 21-15, 21-15 in Saturday's evening session at the Family Circle Tennis Center on Daniel Island. Fourth-seeds Mike Lambert, a Costa Mesa resident, and Stein Metzger upset top seeds Jake Gibb and Sean Rosenthal with a 17-21, 21-15, 15-10 win. Lambert and Metzger advanced to today's final four; Gibb and Rosenthal will play today for a spot in the final four.

ARLINGTON, Texas — Misty May-Treanor, a former Newport Harbor High star, and Kerri Walsh advanced to today’s semifinals of the Assn. of Volleyball Professionals’ Dallas Open Saturday. The top-seeded duo, bound for the Olympics, defeated fellow Newport Harbor alumna April Ross and her partner, Jen Boss, 15-21, 21-18, 15-13, in the quarterfinals. On the men’s side, Matt Fuerbringer, the former Estancia High standout, and Casey Jennings, seeded No. 2, defeated the No. 3-seeded team of Anthony Medel and Fred Souza to advance to today’s semifinals.

MASON, Ohio — Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh had their 111-consecutive-match streak was snapped Sunday at the Assn. of Volleyball Professionals Crocs Cup Shootout. May-Treanor, the former Newport Harbor High star, and Walsh, the two-time Olympic gold-medal winning duo, lost to Elaine Young and Nicole Branagh, 21-19, 10-21, 25-23, in 105 minutes. May-Treanor suffered their last loss, on Aug. 19, 2007, to Branagh and Youngs. May-Treanor and Walsh beat April Ross, also a former Newport Harbor standout, and Jen Boss in the semifinals, 21-14, 23-21.

GLENDALE, Ariz. — Costa Mesa resident Jake Gibb finished second in the Best of the Beach event that completed the Assn. of Volleyball Professionals season Saturday. Gibb, playing with Stein Metzger, was defeated in the final, 21-17, 21-17, by event champion John Hyden and partner Phil Dalhausser. Gibb pocketed $21,750 for his efforts. April Ross, a Newport Harbor High product, finished fifth in the women’s event, claiming $5,250. She paired with Jennifer Boss, who won the event, to defeat Tyra Tyrner and Elaine Youngs, 21-18, 21-15, in pool play.

LONG BEACH — Costa Mesa resident Jake Gibb and partner Sean Rosenthal upset fellow Olympians Phil Dalhausser and Todd Rogers, 21-14, 21-14, Saturday to claim the men’s title at the Assn. of Volleyball Professionals Long Beach Open at Marina Green Park. Gibb and Rosenthal handed the reigning world champions their third loss of the season, their first in 38 matches. It was the second title of the year for Gibb and Rosenthal, who split the $25,000 winning purse. Estancia High product Matt Fuerbringer, playing with Casey Jennings, and Newport Harbor High product Ty Tramblie, paired with Mike Morrison, each finished tied for ninth, splitting $2,875.

BOULDER, Colo. — Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh, the top-ranked women’s team in the world, continued their dominance at the Assn. of Volleyball Professionals Crocs Slam Boulder tournament Saturday. May-Treanor, the Costa Mesa resident and former Newport Harbor High standout, helped her team defeat No. 8 seeds Michael More and Suzanne Stonebarger, 21-10, 21-7, to advance to today’s semifinals. May-Treanor and Walsh, also the No. 1 team on the AVP Tour, will face the No. 4 seeds Dianne DeNecochea and Barbra Fontana.

Fresh off landing a spot on “Dancing With the Stars,” Misty May-Treanor, the former Newport Harbor High standout, will appear on Oprah and a Disney television show. May-Treanor, who won her second Olympic gold medal in beach volleyball with Kerri Walsh at the Beijing Games, was one of 150 athletes invited to appear on Oprah’s season premiere of her show that was shot on Wednesday and will air on Monday at 3 p.m. on KABC. May-Treanor will also make a guest appearance on the Disney Channel’s show, “Wizards of Waverly Place.
