LOGAN, Utah -- Sophomore goalkeeper Chelsea McCarthy collected five saves to record her first career shutout and junior midfielder Caroline Kabe converted a penalty kick in the 43rd minute to propel visiting UC Irvine to a 1-0 Big West Conference triumph over Utah State Sunday. The victory was the second of the weekend for the Anteaters, who come away from their first two conference contests with a 5-5 record, 2-0 in the Big West. UCI knocked off host Idaho, 2-1, Friday.

Matt Hess, a junior forward for the Vanguard University men's soccer team, has been named Lion of the Week after an outstanding performance in the Westminster College Tournament in West Jordan, Utah. Hess helped Vanguard start the 2003 season with an impressive 3-0 record and a tournament title. He scored two goals in the Lions' tournament-opening 3-2 win over Westminster College of Utah. He then scored the only goal in a 1-0 triumph over Colorado School of Mines, which was ranked No. 20 in the NSCAA/Adidas NCAA Division II men's preseason poll.

Newport Beach resident Kevin Herbert qualified for the Ironman Triathlon World Championship, scheduled Oct. 19 in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii. Herbert earned the qualification after he finished in the top 10 in the Utah Triathlon June 8. UC Irvine junior point guard Aaron Fitzgerald scored 17 first-half points to post the lone highlight for the visiting Anteaters, who dropped a Big West Conference men's basketball game at Utah State, 87-49, Saturday. Fitzgerald was held scoreless after intermission as the visitors managed just 19 second-half points to fall to 13-12, 6-10 in conference. Utah State (21-7, 12-5) got 22 points from freshman guard Jaycee Carroll and 21 from senior forward Spencer Nelson before 10,270.

Barry Faulkner BREN EVENTS CENTER -- Late second-half drama had been unkind to Utah State in its uncharacteristic 0-3 Big West Conference road start this season. But the visitors' 77-52 men's basketball triumph over UC Irvine Thursday night, before 2,831 at the Bren Events Center, was less "Who done it?" than "Which Aggie didn't?" contribute to the most lopsided UCI home loss since 1997. "It was one of those nights," Utah State Coach Stew Morrill said of his team's final visit to its familiar nemesis as a member of the Big West.

Steve Virgen With a touch of flair, a dab of luck and a mountain of determination, the UC Irvine men's basketball team achieved an emotional 59-58 Big West Conference victory over Utah State in front of 8,041 at the Smith Center Thursday night. For the second time this season, UCI senior guard Mike Hood proved to be the Aggie killer. Hood, who hit the game-winning, buzzer-beating shot for a 75-73 overtime win Jan. 15, canned two free throws with 1.3 seconds left to give UCI the victory that ended Utah State's nine-game home winning streak.

CEDAR CITY, Utah — The UC Irvine women’s soccer team defeated Southern Utah, 2-0, in non-conference road game Monday. Sophomore Milana Shabestari opened the scoring in the 21st minute and sophomore Tanya Taylor finalized things in the 48th minute, blasting one in from 12 yards out on a carom from a corner kick. Sophomore Danielle de Seriere (two saves), senior Erin Henry (one) and freshman Erica Quevedo (one) combined to post the shutout for UCI (3-4). Southern Utah fell to 0-5.  In men’s soccer action Sunday, UCI defeated Memphis, 3-1, in its final game of the UAB tournament in Birmingham, Ala. UCI finished second in the event.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL Vanguard 80, Lambuth 74 JACKSON, Tenn. — The No. 2-ranked Lions opened the season by knocking off the defending NAIA national champions from Tennessee in the opening round of the round-robin Rotary Classic Thursday at Union University. Senior Jessica Richter had 22 points, while Marissa Rivera (13), Sarah Boyd (11) and Lindsey Rinke (11) also hit double figures for the Lions. Lambuth (1-2) won the rebounding battle, 43-31, and shot better than the Lions (43.9% to 36.2%)
