UC IRVINE - Coach Pat Douglass' UC Irvine men's basketball team is ranked sixth in the CollegeInsider.com Preseason Mid-Major Top 25 poll. UCI, after a school-record, 25-5 season last year, returns Big West Conference Player of the Year Jerry Green. Barry Faulkner On a night when 4,210 spectators at the Bren Events Center said goodbye to the Anteater seniors, it was, perhaps, fitting they also saw the rise of a sophomore star in Ross Schraeder. Near the end of a disappointing season, some have already begun looking to the UCI program's future. But even the heroics of Schraeder, who followed his career-high 27 points Thursday with a game-high 20 points, the hosts fell victim to Big West Conference men's basketball leader and No. 23-ranked Utah State, 59-56.

Steve Virgen When UC Irvine senior Mike Hood hit the game-winner to lead the Anteaters to a 75-73 overtime win over Big West Conference rival Utah State Wednesday night, it seemed to have signified a turning point in UCI's season. The Anteaters, who had been seemingly searching for their identity, played their best basketball throughout their emotional win over Utah State. Now UCI will show if Wednesday night's win was truly pivotal. The Anteaters are tied for first in the conference with University of the Pacific and Cal State Fullerton, thanks to Cal Poly's 75-72 victory over Pacific Thursday night.

Amara Aguilar Ask UC Irvine men's basketball Coach Pat Douglass if the Anteaters' last-second victory over Utah State in the first round of Big West Conference play will have any bearing on tonight's game, and he'll say it doesn't mean a thing. Ask one of UCI's players, and it's a different story. "If I was them, I'd be pretty upset," UCI sophomore center Adam Parada said. "I'd come in here with a little more vengeance. I'm sure they're thinking the same thing we're thinking.

The UC Irvine men's basketball team will attempt to cool off Big West Conference-leading Utah State tonight, when the Anteaters open a two-game, three-day road trip that also includes a stop at Idaho Saturday. Utah State (15-1, 7-0 in conference) has won 12 in a row to post the best start in the program's 101-season history, but has lost the last two games against UCI (9-7, 4-3) in the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum. Tipoff is 7:05 p.m. UCI, coming off a 77-74 overtime loss at Long Beach State Saturday, needs a victory to remain in contact with the Aggies, as well as second-place University of the Pacific (7-1 in the Big West and idle tonight)

BREN EVENTS CENTER - The UC Irvine men's basketball team was chosen as the favorite of the coaches and the media in the Big West preseason polls conducted at the Big West Conference Media Day at the Irvine Marriott Hotel Wednesday. The UCI women's team has a No. 4 ranking without a first-place vote in either poll. The Anteaters' men, last year's regular season champions, return just two starters from last year's squad, but they are key players in 2000-01 Big West Player of the Year Jerry Green and All-Freshman Team member Adam Parada.

Winning 20 games three seasons in a row apparently has rewards. The UC Irvine men's basketball team, which has won 20 games the past three years, but has not reached the NCAA Tournament, has been selected to participate in the 2004 ESPN Bracket Buster Series. In addition, when UCI hosts Utah State this season, the game will be televised on ESPN2, marking the first ESPN telecast of the UCI program from the Bren Events Center in 15 years. The ESPN Bracket Buster event will take place Feb. 21, 2004, and will include 46 teams from 11 conferences with the purpose of providing national exposure in the weeks leading up to the selection of the 65-team NCAA Tournament bracket.
