The UC Irvine women’s volleyball team will open its season Friday by facing host San Diego State at 7 p.m. in the first of three matches at the San Diego State Tournament. Coach Charlie Brande’s Anteaters, coming off a 21-11 season, are scheduled to meet the University of San Diego Saturday at 10 a.m., then conclude tournament play Saturday at 4 p.m. against Albany. UCI, with all but one starter returning, is led by two-time first-team All-Big West Conference senior outside hitter Lauren Kellerman, as well as sophomore opposite Kari Pestolesi.

UCI ASSISTANT BOLTS UC Irvine assistant men's basketball coach Terry Boesel announced his resignation to become associate athletic director at Chapman University. Boesel was an assistant to UC Irvine Coach Pat Douglass for the past three seasons. "Terry is a loyal, tireless worker, very professional and extremely well-organized on and off the court," Douglass said in a press release. "He played a big hand in helping us land one of the best recruiting classes we've had since my time here."

The UC Irvine women's basketball team rallied from a 20-point first-half deficit to defeat nonconference visitor University of San Diego, 86-81, and collect its first victory of the season Sunday. Melissa Jacob led five Anteaters in double figures with 18 points, while Lauren Yadon, Ashley Biggins and Angie Ned added 15 apiece. USD (5-8) led, 45-32, at halftime, but UCI (1-9) opened the second half with a 17-7 run, fueled by nine points from Ned, who sat out the first half after returning Sunday morning from Louisiana, where she attended her grandmother's funeral.

Pacific Life Insurance Co. in Newport Beach has named Sharon Cheever as its next general counsel, as longtime leader David Carmichael has announced his retirement after 30 years with the company. Cheever, who joined Pacific Life in 1986, will become the new general counsel Jan. 1. A graduate of the University of San Diego School of Law, she worked as an associate with the law firm O’Melveny & Myers before joining the insurance company. Carmichael started work for the company three decades ago and has been general counsel for 15 years.

UC IRVINE - The UC Irvine baseball team, in its first season since 1992, ranks No. 8 among the nation's best recruiting classes, according to Baseball America. The Anteaters, who open their season at home, Jan. 25, against the University of San Diego, feature pitcher/first baseman Brett Smith of Sonora High and Chatsworth High's second baseman Gregg Wallis, UCI's first player to commit, as well as a load of junior college stars. Two local law school deans will battle over recent Supreme Court rulings on same-sex marriage in celebration of Constitution Day at Orange Coast College on Thursday. Erwin Chemerinsky, founding dean of UC Irvine Law School, will return to OCC for the fourth year to debate John Eastman, the former dean of Chapman University Law School and visiting scholar at the University of San Diego. The pair debated the Affordable Care Act during last year's Constitution Day. The event is free and runs from 11:10 a.m. to 12:35 p.m. in the Robert B. Moore Theatre, 2701 Fairview Road, Costa Mesa.

The University of San Diego completed a three-game sweep of the UC Irvine baseball team with a 10-6 nonconference win Sunday at Anteater Ballpark. The Toreros got on the board in the fifth inning on a two-run single by shortstop Ben Quinto and a run-scoring single by left fielder Joey Prast to take a 3-0 lead. The Anteaters (0-3) answered in the fifth inning when Jon Horwitz whacked an RBI double. B.J. Eucce added another double and Effren Trejo singled to drive in a run to tie the score, 3-3. San Diego (3-0)
