Corona del Mar High senior quarterback Mitch Sands has committed to play football at the University of San Diego, Coach Jason Hitchens said Friday. Sands, the Newport-Mesa Dream Team Player of the Year, threw for 1,560 yards and 21 touchdowns last season. He also set CdM’s regular-season record for touchdown passes with 18. Sands, a first-team All-Pacific Coast League pick, also played cornerback. The 6-foot-1, 180-pounder led the Sea Kings (10-3, 3-1 in the Pacific Coast League)

The UC Irvine women's soccer team ended the season with a 2-1 loss to the University of San Diego in a nonconference game Friday. Hayley McNallan scored 10 minutes into the game on a breakaway with an assist from Natalie Franklin to give the Anteaters a 1-0 lead, but the Toreros answered with goals by Katie Allen (27:07) and Ashley Jacobsen (38:55). Goalkeeper Sarah Swancutt played the first half, recording two saves, while Chelsea McCarthy played the second half and made three saves.

Matt Fisher, a junior second baseman on the UC Irvine baseball team, has been named Big West Player of the Week. Fisher helped UCI to its second series win of the season, a 2-1 edge against the University of San Diego. In the two victories, Fisher collected eight RBIs and three runs scored, including a double and a home run. In the final game of the series, he went 3 for 5 with five RBIs and three runs scored, including the team's first grand slam of the season in the Anteaters' 10-2 victory.

Balboa resident Molly Warmington, a Newport Harbor High product and University of San Diego senior, earned her first Grand Prix show jumping competition victory by topping the 27-rider field at the Grand Prix of Bakersfield, held last month at the Kern County Fairgrounds. Warmington, riding California-bred thoroughbred Mr. Pacific, was one of 13 competitors to complete a perfect round, jumping over 5-foot wide fences ranging from 4-6 to 5-0 high. Those 13 riders then competed on a shorter course, a run which Warmington completed in the fastest time to earn the victory.

The UC Irvine women's soccer team salvaged a split on its weekend Big West Conference road trip by blanking Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, 2-0, Sunday. It was the first conference loss of the season for the host Mustangs, who had won their five previous Big West contests. Junior Caroline Kabe knocked in her fourth goal of the season for the game-winner in the 23rd minute, converting an assist by Hayley McNallan. Kabe then earned the assist on freshman Kim Lloyd's insurance tally in the 57th minute.

David Matthew Perry With wonderful memories and saddened hearts we say goodbye to David Matthew Perry, aka “Big Wave Dave”, who passed away on February 21st at the age of 45. Dave was born in Los Angeles July 9th, 1963 and his family moved to Newport Beach in 1965. The family then moved to the Seattle area for a brief time before returning to Newport in 1976. Dave graduated from Corona Del Mar High School in 1981 and went on to receive a Bachelor’s degree from the University of San Diego.

The UC Irvine women's soccer team absorbed its first loss of the season Sunday, as host University of San Diego earned a 3-0 nonconference triumph at Torero Stadium. UCI sophomore goalie Melissa Welliver, who had zero chances in the Anteaters' season-opening 1-0 win over visiting San Jose State Friday, was victimized for three goals for only the second time in her 21 collegiate games. The Toreros (1-1) took a lead when Amy Epstein scored in the 36th minute.

CEREMONY FOR SWANSON The UC Irvine baseball team honored senior pitcher Glenn Swanson for his April 25 no-hitter prior to its game Friday against Pacific. The brief ceremony, recognizing Swanson for his 14-strikeout gem against the University of San Diego, also included former Anteater Tad Davis, who pitched UCI's second no-hitter in 1974. Dave Wollos, who threw UCI's first no-hitter in 1970, was unable to make the trip but sent a brief statement of congratulations to be read during the event.

Gfroerer-Kofford Mr. and Mrs. Galfred Gfroerer of Menlo Park announce the engagement of their daughter Nicole Gfroerer of Menlo Park to Kyle Kofford of Newport Beach. The bride-elect graduated from St. Francis High School and the University of the Pacific in Stockton. The future bridegroom, son of Mr. and Mrs. Maurice Kofford of Newport Beach, graduated from Newport Harbor High School and the University of the Pacific Stockton. A December wedding is planned at Sts. Peter and Paul Church in San Francisco.

DALLAS -- UC Irvine's women's basketball team closed out a disappointing trip to Texas with a 77-51 loss to Southern Methodist on Thursday night. The Anteaters were outscored, 167-110, in the two-game road swing after losing to North Texas, 90-59, on Tuesday night. Southern Methodist (4-7) shot 53.1% from the field in the first half, holding UCI to six baskets in the opening half. The Anteaters scored three points in the final 9:30 of the half, all on free throws, and trailed, 42-17, at the break.

SANTA BARBARA — The defending national champions were ready for their close-up Wednesday night, as host UC Santa Barbara trounced UC Irvine, 4-0, in a Big West Conference men’s soccer game played before 3,402, as well as a national television audience on Fox Soccer Channel. It was the fourth straight winless effort for UCI (5-2-2, 0-1 in conference) against a team that made the 2006 NCAA Tournament. Coach George Kuntz’s Anteaters had hoped to use its national television debut to impress the NCAA Tournament selection committee that jilted the Anteaters after a 13-4-3 campaign last season.

Junior second baseman Cody Cipriano was named Most Valuable Player at the UC Irvine baseball team's recent banquet. Cipriano received the top award among six given to five players. Junior Justin Cassel was named Most Valuable Pitcher. Senior Glenn Swanson was named Best Teammate, an award that will be named for him in subsequent years. Freshman shortstop Ben Orloff was honored twice. He was named Best Defensive Player and also the recipient of the Hustle-Attitude-Mentality award.
