One could argue that geography worked against the UC Irvine men's soccer program when it fell into the newly created four-team South Division of the Big West Conference this season. But with an ambitious, some might say imposing schedule that includes road games at four of the top 11 teams in the national preseason coaches' poll, Anteaters Coach George Kuntz has proved that when it comes to finding top-flight competition, UCI knows no boundaries. No. 13-ranked UCI has averaged 15 wins the last four seasons, during which it has won three conference regular-season and three conference tournament titles and made three NCAA Tournament appearances.

IRVINE - Its best regular-season finish in at least a decade was quickly rendered a footnote Tuesday, as the UC Irvine women's basketball team wasted an exhilarating start and its first home postseason game ever in the quarterfinals of the Big West Conference Tournament. UC Santa Barbara (15-15), the No. 6 seed, overcame a disastrous opening to earn a 61-51 victory that ended the season for the No. 3-seeded Anteaters (13-17). UCI held the Gauchos without a point for the first 6:28 and led, 8-0, despite having its first-team all-conference senior guard, Kassandra McCalister, come off the bench due to a broken bone in her foot.

IRVINE - The UC Irvine men's basketball team does not have a senior this season. But it's nights like Wednesday that UCI Coach Russell Turner is happy to be saying goodbye to those exhausting their eligibility elsewhere. Visiting UC Santa Barbara, the three senior starters for which include Orlando Johnson, provided all the pomp and circumstance the Anteaters could handle on its way to an 85-62 win at the Bren Events Center. Johnson, recently named to the John R. Wooden Award midseason top-25 list, made nine of 11 field-goal attempts to finish with a game-high 25 points.

IRVINE - The UC Irvine men's soccer team, with two surprising NCAA Tournament snubs in the previous four seasons, made a clear statement as to its viability as a veritable lock to make this year's 48-team NCAA field on Wednesday. Or was it an opening remark? The host Anteaters, who repeated as Big West Conference regular-season champions to earn the No. 1 seed in the four-team conference tournament, scored 35 seconds into the Big West Tournament semifinal against No. 4-seeded UC Riverside.

George Kuntz has learned not to get too excited about mid-season success. But the UC Irvine men's soccer coach was fibbing somewhat behind a muted grin Saturday night, when he was quick to call the Anteaters' 2-0 Big West Conference win at UC Santa Barbara "Just one game. " A win for any Big West program over UCSB, which has won seven conference regular-season and conference tournament titles in the last 10 seasons, is always a treasured accomplishment, particularly at always rustic and usually rowdy Harder Stadium.
