IRVINE - Beating UC Santa Barbara for the first time in Coach Paula Weishoff's four-year tenure was no small feat for the UC Irvine women's volleyball team. The Anteaters shrugged off their propensity to shrink in the Big West Conference caldron Friday by seizing their chance to, in the words of UCI coaches, "Be big!. " The result was a 25-14, 19-25, 25-23, 28-26 conference-opening triumph that could shape the remainder of the Anteaters' season. "In the past, if we had a tough preseason, this match was the defining moment of our season," Weishoff said of the conference opener, which her squad had lost its first three seasons, including five-set road setbacks against Pacific and UCSB, as well as a five-set home loss to Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.

IRVINE - Its best regular-season finish in at least a decade was quickly rendered a footnote Tuesday, as the UC Irvine women's basketball team wasted an exhilarating start and its first home postseason game ever in the quarterfinals of the Big West Conference Tournament. UC Santa Barbara (15-15), the No. 6 seed, overcame a disastrous opening to earn a 61-51 victory that ended the season for the No. 3-seeded Anteaters (13-17). UCI held the Gauchos without a point for the first 6:28 and led, 8-0, despite having its first-team all-conference senior guard, Kassandra McCalister, come off the bench due to a broken bone in her foot.

IRVINE — A second Big West Conference regular-season title in three seasons will have to wait. And, perhaps even more disappointing for the UC Irvine men's soccer team, so too will the acquisition of bragging rights against rival UC Santa Barbara. The two perennial Big West powers, who also occupy a high profile nationally, failed to settle any score with a scoreless tie Saturday night at UCI. A victory would have clinched the Big West regular-season crown for the No. 7-ranked Anteaters (13-1-3, 6-0-2 in conference)

As the son of former UC Santa Barbara baseball coach Bob Brontsema, UC Irvine freshman John Brontsema lugged bats back to the Gauchos' dugout for most of his childhood. Christian, bound for UC Santa Barbara, played for Santa Barbara Water Polo Club 18-and-under team at this year's USA Water Polo Junior Olympics. Santa Barbara was the defending division champion, yet many considered SOCAL Black the tournament favorite.
