Danielle de Seriere can't stop smiling. The senior goalkeeper is one of many reasons the UC Irvine women's soccer team is off to an 8-1-2 start and has earned the program's first national ranking. And de Seriere said Monday during taping for the year's first edition of the Blue & Gold Report radio program that she was anything but indifferent about the Anteaters' noteworthy opening. "It's awesome," said de Seriere, who has posted four shutouts to help Coach Scott Juniper's squad outscore teams, 25-11, this season.

WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL BYU def. UC Irvine PROVO, Utah - The visiting Anteaters were held to a season-worst .152 team hitting percentage in a 25-16, 25-18, 25-20 nonconference loss on Thursday. Arielle Manz and Marisa Bubica had five block assists apiece to help UCI (5-2) post a 9-5 advantage in team blocks. Aly Squires and Cassidy Pickrell had nine kills apiece for UCI, while Shelley Anderson had 24 assists and two aces. BYU is 6-3. UCI plays Utah at the Utah Valley tournament on Friday.

UC Irvine 68, San Diego State 66 SAN DIEGO — Mikah Maly-Karros had 20 points and a season-best 14 rebonds to lead the Anteaters to their first win of the season in the nonconference game Tuesday. Jade Smith-Williams added 19 points and chipped in a team-best five assists for UCI (1-3). Junior Kassandra McCalister, an Oregon State transfer in her second game as an Anteater, had 14 poitns off the bench in 29 minutes. UCI posted a 47-39 rebounding advantage, overcoming a 22-17 turnover deficit.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL Sacramento State 99, UC Irvine 94 SACRAMENTO - Senior Camille Buckley had 22 points and 10 rebounds to lead four Anteaters who scored in double figures in the nonconference road game Saturday. Buckley made nine of 12 field-goal attempts and all four free throws as UCI lost a 55-53 halftime lead. Senior guard Jennifer Tsurumoto had 19 points and a team-best seven assists, while senior reserve Vanessa Aguilar made four of seven there-point tries on her way to 16 points and senior Jazmyne White chipped in 12 points, nine rebounds, four assists and two steals.

The UC Irvine women's water polo team is ranked No. 6 in the preseason poll as it enters its season opener on Saturday at the UC Santa Barbara Winter Classic. Coach Dan Klatt's Anteaters open the tournament against Cal Baptist at 10:40 a.m. They take on San Jose State at 3:20 on Saturday. On Sunday, UCI faces Cal State Monterey Bay at 9:30 a.m. and No. 4-ranked Arizona State at 1:50 p.m. UCI was 21-9 last season, when they earned a share of the Big West Conference regular-season title, but failed to make the NCAA Tournament.

WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL Pioneer Classic DENVER — UC Irvine rallied to defeat host Denver, 22-25, 25-15, 13-25, 25-15, 15-13, Saturday to cap a 3-0 season-opening run in the tournament. Earlier Saturday, UCI outlasted Air Force, 23-25, 31-29, 25-16, 24-26, 15-10, behind 18 kills from Aly Squires, 15 from Marisa Bubica and 10 from Shannon Fleming. Squires hit .311, had a team-best 20 digs and had two aces to share the team lead for the 'Eaters, who received 26 assists from Mackenzi Campbell, a Newport Harbor High product, and 21 from freshman Shelley Anderson.

WOMEN'S SOCCER UC Irvine 2, UC Riverside 0 Jasmine Nickelberry assisted both goals for the host Anteaters, who scored twice within 50 seconds to earn the Big West Conference triumph on Thursday. Senior Natalia Ledezma opened the scoring in the 43rd minute off a corner kick. Then, early in the 44th minute, junior Bianca Frontino scored on a breakout to allow UCI to improve to 7-5, 2-1 in conference. Corey Tobin made two saves to preserve the shutout as the 'Eaters posted a 16-4 advantage in shots.

WOMEN'S GOLF Price's Give 'Em Five Intercollegiate Las Cruces, NM — UC Irvine finished second at the New Mexico State Golf Course Wednesday. The Anteaters shot a 295 on the final round with a 54-hole total of 872 (290-287-295). Portland State captured the title after shooting a 867 (291-288-288) behind the efforts of medalist A Ram Choi, who fired a five-under par 67 Wednesday to win the tournament with a score of 208 (68-73-67). Cal State Fullerton (881) was third, Nevada was fourth (885)

WOMEN'S WATER POLO UC Irvine 10, Long Beach State 7 The host Anteaters clinched their third straight Big West Conference regular-season championship behind four goals from Danielle Warde and eight saves from Jillian Yocum on Thursday. No. 6-ranked UCI (21-7, 5-0 in conference) has now won five Big West regular-season crowns. The 'Eaters led, 3-1, after the first period and were not outscored in any of the three remaining quarters. No. 10-ranked Long Beach State fell to 18-10, 2-3. UCI finishes the regular season Friday at 7 p.m. against No. 12 Loyola Marymount at Anteater Aquatics Complex.

ANAHEIM - The six remaining seniors in uniform for the UC Irvine women's basketball team played their final three games in socks that displayed the skyline of their native region. It was a fitting gesture for an Anteaters' team that played, by any measure, well above the clouds all season long. The Anteaters (17-15), picked to finish eighth in the nine-team Big West Conference, fell to top-seeded Cal State Northridge, 78-60, in the semifinals of the conference tournament on Friday at Honda Center.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL Long Beach State 85, UC Irvine 75 LONG BEACH — Senior guard Jennifer Tsurumoto scored a career-high 30 points, but the Anteaters lost an eight-point lead late in regulation in the Big West Conference opener Thursday at Walter Pyramid. Tsurumoto made seven of 14 field-goal attempts, was three for five from three-point range and made all 13 of her foul shots. She also had a team-best four assists. UCI led, 48-37, with 14:51 left in regulation and Tsurumoto's layup with 3:54 left in regulation gave the visitors (7-8)

The fall semester is only a few weeks old, but already soccer players at local universities have experienced one of the great joys of collegiate life: an eventful road trip. The men's and women's teams at both UC Irvine and Vanguard came away with impressive road victories last week and the Vanguard women, coming off an 18-2-1 campaign in 2012, are 5-0 this season without the luxury of a home game. The Vanguard women, ranked No. 2 in the NAIA, topped then No. 8-ranked Mobile, 2-0, on Saturday at Orange Beach Sportsplex in Alabama.

WOMEN'S SOCCER UC Irvine 1, BYU 0 PROVO, Utah - Natalia Ledezma scored off an assist from Zoya Farzaneh with 31 seconds left to give the Anteaters the upset over the No. 6-ranked Cougars Saturday. Goalie Jennifer Randazzo made three saves for UCI (4-3). The Anteaters and BYU (4-1-1) both had eight shots. Farzaneh settled a ball and headed upfield feeding a through ball to Ledezma. With the seconds ticking away and the keeper approaching, Ledezma shoveled a shot to the left of Cougar keeper Erica Owens and into the back of the net to put the 'Eaters up 1-0 after a long, hard-fought match.
