As coach of the Corona del Mar High boys' lacrosse program, G.W. Mix doesn't get to see his two sons play in college often. He's too busy coaching, while Ryan Mix and Casey Mix are away competing. Ryan plays for the University of Notre Dame and Casey for UC Santa Barbara. Mix's boys are coming home this week and he will get to see them play in person. Dad came up with a great idea: create a college lacrosse exhibition in Orange County and invite the teams his sons play on. The event, which looks to promote lacrosse in California, took several years to pull off. The schedules worked out for all parties involved.

Troy Hardy camped out in one of the coolest areas at Mt. San Antonio College, site of last week's CIF Southern Section Divisional Track and Field finals. Underneath a canopy, away from the track, Hardy escaped the heat. He sat next to three coaches and rested before his late afternoon event, the 300-meter hurdles in the Division 3 final. When word leaked of the first CdM athlete to qualify for the next meet, Masters, Hardy stayed calm. While CdM's coaches congratulated Matt Hurst for recording the meet's fifth fastest time in the 400-meter sprint, a 48.08-second effort, breaking a CdM school record, Hardy focused.

The 6-foot-6 Ellis helped CdM win the CIF Southern Section Division II title last year. “After I found out that I got in, it was like an easy call,” said Ellis, adding that his 3.96 grade-point average and 1880 SAT score were good enough to get in. Though there is still work to be done toward the UC Irvine men's basketball team's goal of an outright Big West Conference title, earning at least a share with a victory at Cal State Fullerton on Thursday was something for Anteaters' supporters to relish. UCI fans, who last celebrated a regular-season co-championship in the 2001-02 season, and an outright title a year before that, may also gain encouragement from the play of junior Will Davis in the 62-44 win over the Titans. UCI players and coaches, however, will hold any celebratory antics until Saturday's regular-season and conference finale against visiting UC Davis at 4:30 p.m. UCI (21-10, 10-3 in conference)

First place in the Big West Conference was up for grabs by the time the UC Irvine men's basketball team took the court on Saturday. Coach Russell Turner knew UC Santa Barbara, the team with which the Anteaters went into the day tied for first place, lost a tough one at home to Cal State Northridge in the waning seconds of overtime. He made sure to keep the result from his Anteaters prior to them playing host to UC Riverside. "I didn't want their minds on anything other than competing … and our game plan," Turner said.
