COSTA MESA - The Vanguard University softball team split its nonconference doubleheader with visiting UC San Diego on Monday. The Lions (20-12) rallied with two runs in the seventh inning to win, 3-2, in the opener, before losing, 8-0, in the nightcap. Trailing, 2-1, Nikki Benning's single drove in Celina Camarillo with the tying run before Jill Jessen's bases-loaded walk won the game. Camarillo went 2 for 3 with a run scored and an RBI for Vanguard, while Gina Liebengood pitched two scoreless innings of relief to earn her 10th win of the season.

COSTA MESA - Curt Garner's scoring fly ball to center field in the bottom of the 10th inning plated Chad Chop as host Vanguard University came from behind to defeat UC San Diego, 6-5, in a nonconference baseball game Thursday. Chop, one of three Lions with two hits, singled in the 10th with one out, moved to second on Joe Carnahan's single and advanced to third on a single by Jason Searle, before Garner's game-winning sacrifice fly. VU tied the game in the eighth on a solo home run by Carnahan.

SAN DIEGO - The Vanguard University baseball team were shut out by host UC San Diego, 11-0, Wednesday in nonconference action. Matt Tisthammer went 2 for 3 to lead the Lions (4-23). Andrew Holloway pitched a seven-hit shutout with seven strikeouts for UCSD (12-4). IRVINE -- UC Irvine's women's volleyball team took the Big West Conference leaders to the limit before losing. UC Santa Barbara rallied to defeat the Anteaters, 25-30, 30-28, 20-30, 30-18, 15-10 in a conference match at Crawford Court. Jennifer Moser recorded a career-best 31 digs for UCI. Lauren Kellerman had a career-high 21 kills for UCI (9-14, 2-6 in conference) and had eight digs. Trisha White added 14 kills, seven digs and five block assists. Christa Conom finished with a double-double, recording 47 assists and 10 digs for the Anteaters.

Santa Clara University freshman Taylor Harkins, a Corona del Mar High product, was recently named to the Western Water Polo Assn. All-Freshman team. Harkins played in all 32 games for the Broncos, scoring 17 goals, tops among freshmen on the team. She also recorded nine steals. Santa Clara finished 19-13 and in fourth place at the WWPA championships, falling to UC San Diego, 8-7, on April 27. At Corona del Mar, Harkins was a four-year varsity player and part of three CIF Southern Section Division II championship teams, from 2004 to 2006.

college roundup for Monday editonDAVIS, Calif. -- Victor Lamm, Alex Sundling and Trevor Dobson won in singles and doubles to help UC Irvine earn a 5-2 nonconference men's tennis victory over UC Davis on Sunday. Lamm won, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 2 singles, then teamed with Sundling -- a 7-6, 7-6 winner at No. 5 singles -- to win at No. 3 doubles, 8-5. Dobson won at No. 6 singles and teamed with Mustafa Ulukan for an 8-6 triumph at No. 1 doubles. Aaron Ellis was another singles winner for the Anteaters, who improved to 3-6. WOMEN'S WATER POLO Triton Invitational LA JOLLA -- UC Irvine saw a 3-1 halftime lead vanish in a 6-5 loss to host UC San Diego in the fifth-place game of the Triton Invitational on Sunday.

The No. 2-ranked UC Irvine men's volleyball fell in game one 30-27, then rolled to a 30-21, 30-26, 30-21 win over UC San Diego in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match on the Anteaters' campus Friday night. With the win, UCI remains undefeated at 8-0 overall and 2-0 in the MPSF, while UCSD drops to 2-3 on the season and 0-2 in league play. Jimmy Pelzel led the Anteaters with 20 kills and six block assists. Monte Tucker added 11 kills and a team-high eight digs, while Nic Vislay totaled 10 kills in the victory.

UC Irvine earned 757 points to place first in the UC San Diego Triton men's swimming and diving invitational Saturday. UC San Diego (564) took second, followed by North Coast Aquatics (235) and Cal State Northridge (217). The Anteaters placed first in eight of 28 events. Hazem Amr, Ajamu Palmer, Attilla Szilagyi and Gonny Shimura teamed up to win the 200-yard freestyle relay in a time of 1:27.78. Suruk Pattanasinth (1:58.76) was the top finisher in the 200 individual medley while Shimura (1:54.

Sophomore Kiwi Winkler had 37 kills to lead OCC (18-1, 11-1 in conference), and Jacqi Reed added 30. UC Irvine junior libero Michael Brinkley and senior middle blocker Scott Kevorken have been named All-American by the American Volleyball Coaches Assn. Brinkley is a first-team honoree for the second straight season, while Kevorken is a second-team choice. Brinkley averaged 2.52 digs per set and has recorded double-figure digs 13 times in 2014. The only UCI player to play in every set this year ranks second on the school's career digs list. He was named first-team All-Mountain Pacific Sports Federation the last two seasons.

BASEBALL Vanguard 3, Westmont 2 (11 innings) Freshman Brandon Sandoval singled, stole second, advanced to third and scored the winning run on a Taylor McKnight groundout for the No. 25-ranked Lions in the Golden State Athletic Conference game Friday. Sandoval led the seven-hit attack for the Lions (25-12, 16-9 in conference), going two for five. Marshall McKinnon (3-1) pitched two hitless innings to earn the win in relief of starter Scott Torrey, who allowed eight hits and two runs in nine innings.

BASEBALL UC Irvine 7, Hawaii 1 HONOLULU — Senior Andrew Morales pitched 7 1/3 shutout innings to lead the visiting Anteaters in the first game of a three-game Big West Conference series late Friday night. Morales, who is 6-0 this season, 16-0 as an Anteater and 37-1 as a collegian, having spent his freshman and sophomore seasons at Rio Hondo Community College, extended his scoreless-innings streak to 25 1/3 by allowing seven hits, walking one and striking out four. He lowered his earned-run average to 0.45.

MEN'S VOLLEYBALL UC Irvine def. UC San Diego Senior Jeremy Dejno had 15 kills, hit .619 and produced a career-high five block assists to lead the host No. 8-ranked Anteaters to a 25-11, 25-20, 25-12, sweep in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation action on Friday. Zack La Cavera added nine kills, hit .389, and had a team-best seven digs as UCI (6-5, 3-4 in conference) hit .646 as a team, while holding UCSD to a .049 hitting percentage. Daniel Stork had 29 assists and Scott Kevorken had six kills in nine swings, three aces and four blocks for the winners.

MEN'S BASKETBALL Vanguard 85, Westmont 74 SANTA BARBARA — Junior guard DeAngelo Jones had 30 points to lead the visiting Lions in the Golden State Athletic Conference game on Tuesday. Jones was eight for 14 from the field, including four of five from three-point range, and also sank 10 of his 11 foul shots. Melissa Norman contributed 13 points and 10 rebounds, while Nicole Ballestero and Jordie Smith scored 10 points each for Vanguard (2-0), which led, 54-24, at halftime. UC Irvine junior center fielder Dominique Taylor was selected in the 15th round by the Kansas City Royals (No. 444 overall) to highlight players with local ties chosen in the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft on Saturday. J.J. Altobelli, the son of Orange Coast College Coach John Altobelli, went in the 18th round (545th overall) to St. Louis, while UCI junior pitcher Matt Whitehouse went in the 19th round to Cleveland (561st overall). The USC women's water polo team defeated Stanford, 11-7, on Sunday to win the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation championship in Berkeley. The next day, the Trojans were awarded the top seed for the NCAA Championship, which begins May 10 and is hosted by Harvard. USC (24-1) features junior co-captain Kaleigh Gilchrist (Newport Harbor High) and seniors Nicolina McCall (Newport Harbor) and Chelsea Silvers (Newport Beach-Mater Dei). Gilchrist is the second-leading scorer (41 goals)

Costa Mesa High senior Alyssa Dasca admitted being nervous just before trying out to be a cheerleader for UC San Diego this past weekend. The three-day tryout didn't seem so intimidating to Dasca, the Mustangs' cheer captain. The stress really came from not knowing the San Diego area too well. But once she found the spot, she was fine. "It was different than something I was used to," Dasca said. "But I just did my best. " Dasca made the team to be a Tritons cheerleader. She went to UC San Diego Sunday to be fitted for her cheerleading gear.

UCI (14-7, 2-1 in conference) outscored the No. 15 Aggies, 3-1, in the final quarter. McKenna Mitchell led UCI with two goals. Jillian Yocum made six saves for the Anteaters.
