COSTA MESA - The Vanguard University softball team split its nonconference doubleheader with visiting UC San Diego on Monday. The Lions (20-12) rallied with two runs in the seventh inning to win, 3-2, in the opener, before losing, 8-0, in the nightcap. Trailing, 2-1, Nikki Benning's single drove in Celina Camarillo with the tying run before Jill Jessen's bases-loaded walk won the game. Camarillo went 2 for 3 with a run scored and an RBI for Vanguard, while Gina Liebengood pitched two scoreless innings of relief to earn her 10th win of the season.

COSTA MESA - Curt Garner's scoring fly ball to center field in the bottom of the 10th inning plated Chad Chop as host Vanguard University came from behind to defeat UC San Diego, 6-5, in a nonconference baseball game Thursday. Chop, one of three Lions with two hits, singled in the 10th with one out, moved to second on Joe Carnahan's single and advanced to third on a single by Jason Searle, before Garner's game-winning sacrifice fly. VU tied the game in the eighth on a solo home run by Carnahan.

Andrew Holloway pitched a seven-hit shutout with seven strikeouts for UCSD (12-4). IRVINE -- UC Irvine's women's volleyball team took the Big West Conference leaders to the limit before losing. UC Santa Barbara rallied to defeat the Anteaters, 25-30, 30-28, 20-30, 30-18, 15-10 in a conference match at Crawford Court. Jennifer Moser recorded a career-best 31 digs for UCI. Lauren Kellerman had a career-high 21 kills for UCI (9-14, 2-6 in conference) and had eight digs. Trisha White added 14 kills, seven digs and five block assists. Christa Conom finished with a double-double, recording 47 assists and 10 digs for the Anteaters.

Santa Clara University freshman Taylor Harkins, a Corona del Mar High product, was recently named to the Western Water Polo Assn. All-Freshman team. Harkins played in all 32 games for the Broncos, scoring 17 goals, tops among freshmen on the team. She also recorded nine steals. Santa Clara finished 19-13 and in fourth place at the WWPA championships, falling to UC San Diego, 8-7, on April 27. At Corona del Mar, Harkins was a four-year varsity player and part of three CIF Southern Section Division II championship teams, from 2004 to 2006.

Lamm won, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 2 singles, then teamed with Sundling -- a 7-6, 7-6 winner at No. 5 singles -- to win at No. 3 doubles, 8-5. Dobson won at No. 6 singles and teamed with Mustafa Ulukan for an 8-6 triumph at No. 1 doubles. Aaron Ellis was another singles winner for the Anteaters, who improved to 3-6. WOMEN'S WATER POLO Triton Invitational LA JOLLA -- UC Irvine saw a 3-1 halftime lead vanish in a 6-5 loss to host UC San Diego in the fifth-place game of the Triton Invitational on Sunday.

UC Irvine earned 757 points to place first in the UC San Diego Triton men's swimming and diving invitational Saturday. UC San Diego (564) took second, followed by North Coast Aquatics (235) and Cal State Northridge (217). The Anteaters placed first in eight of 28 events. Hazem Amr, Ajamu Palmer, Attilla Szilagyi and Gonny Shimura teamed up to win the 200-yard freestyle relay in a time of 1:27.78. Suruk Pattanasinth (1:58.76) was the top finisher in the 200 individual medley while Shimura (1:54.

The No. 2-ranked UC Irvine men's volleyball fell in game one 30-27, then rolled to a 30-21, 30-26, 30-21 win over UC San Diego in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match on the Anteaters' campus Friday night. With the win, UCI remains undefeated at 8-0 overall and 2-0 in the MPSF, while UCSD drops to 2-3 on the season and 0-2 in league play. Jimmy Pelzel led the Anteaters with 20 kills and six block assists. Monte Tucker added 11 kills and a team-high eight digs, while Nic Vislay totaled 10 kills in the victory.
