IRVINE - Even in a sport known as "the beautiful game," there is no allowance for style points. In fact, where it needed them most, there were no points at all for the host UC Irvine men's soccer team, which twice lost leads before losing a Big West Conference match, 3-2, to UC Riverside. The No. 9-ranked Anteaters were the most aesthetic and offensive team on the pitch in its final regular-season home game of the season. UCI posted a 20-8 advantage in shots over the Highlanders.

IRVINE — UC Irvine men's basketball coach Russell Turner declined to share what he told his players after a 73-68 Big West Conference-opening loss to visiting UC Riverside on Tuesday. But the Anteaters surely will hope they never here such disparaging words again. UCI (6-7) led, 49-39, with 12:13 remaining, but went the next 10:34 with only one field goal. The Highlanders (5-7) used that cold spell to not only regain their bearings, but also take control of the game.

RIVERSIDE - UC Irvine ventured to UC Riverside for the Big West Conference baseball opener on Friday and a telethon broke out. How else to describe the spirit of giving that pervaded in the Highlanders' 4-3 victory at the Riverside Sports Complex? Both teams donated costly mistakes to the cause, with UC Riverside getting a jump on things, only to benefit in kind. Ultimately, it was two miscues by the Anteaters - one of which manifested itself in an error that marred the box score for the team that entered the game leading the nation in fielding percentage - that spelled doom for UCI. It was the 'Eaters' first loss in a conference opener since 2006.

RIVERSIDE — It was fitting, perhaps, that UC Irvine junior ace Matt Summers kept posting zeroes during his complete-game two-hitter in a 12-0 thumping of host UC Riverside that opened a three-game Big West Conference series Friday night. Some believe Summers, who tied his career high with 10 strikeouts and threw 92 pitches in the Anteaters' first complete game of the season, continued to add to a now-consistent body of work that may help add a zero or two to a professional contract that looms after his selection in the June draft.

RIVERSIDE - There is taking what the opponent gives you and there is taking what you simply decide the opponent can't deny you. UC Riverside accomplished the latter in handing visiting UC Irvine a 68-58 Big West Conference men's basketball defeat Saturday. The Highlanders (5-13, 2-4 in conference), who had lost three straight against Big West competition, dominated inside and shot better from the perimeter to halt the Anteaters' three-game conference winning streak that had allowed them to earn a share for second place entering Saturday.

IRVINE — Still closer to the middle of the pack than the leaders of the Big West Conference, this was one series in which the UC Irvine baseball team was supposed to gain ground. After two games against visiting UC Riverside, however, the Anteaters have been relegated to middle ground. The Highlanders (10-23, 4-4 in conference) halted their seven-game losing streak by outplaying the No. 5-ranked ’Eaters (24-8, 6-5) in all facets, evening the three-game series at one game apiece with a 5-3 victory that UCI may long regret.

RIVERSIDE - The UC Irvine baseball team gave new meaning to the term seventh-inning stretch Friday. And, like a rubber band pulled to its limit, the Anteaters' bullpen snapped to help host UC Riverside claim a 7-5 Big West Conference triumph at the Riverside Sports Complex. The win drops UCI, ranked No. 21 by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Assn., to 16-7, 0-2 in conference. It's UCI's worst start in conference play since 2006, when it lost its first four and six of its first seven against Big West competition.

Tyler Rios is at the point where he can teach. Yet, the Estancia High senior baseball standout is humble enough to know he is still learning. He knows a great deal about the game and he wants to pass it on. Rios' cousin, Nick Torres, is a freshman who plays shortstop. He's played varsity a few games this season. Rios usually stars as the Eagles' shortstop. "I've been around baseball for only 14 years and I've learned a lot," said Rios, after he helped lead the Eagles to a 7-1 win at Montebello in a CIF Southern Section Division 4 wild-card game Tuesday.
