WOMEN'S SOCCER UC Irvine 2, UC Riverside 0 Jasmine Nickelberry assisted both goals for the host Anteaters, who scored twice within 50 seconds to earn the Big West Conference triumph on Thursday. Senior Natalia Ledezma opened the scoring in the 43rd minute off a corner kick. Then, early in the 44th minute, junior Bianca Frontino scored on a breakout to allow UCI to improve to 7-5, 2-1 in conference. Corey Tobin made two saves to preserve the shutout as the 'Eaters posted a 16-4 advantage in shots.

UC Irvine senior Jon Endrikat won a tightly contested singles match against Norman Tam in the Anteaters men's tennis team's 7-0 victory over visiting UC Riverside Saturday in Big West Conference action. Endrikat defeated Tam, 6-3, 4-6, 10-7 in the tiebreaker. UCI (8-6) won two of three doubles matches to clinch the doubles point. Junior Brian Morton, a Corona del Mar High product, defeated Brent Davis, 6-4, 6-3 in No. 2 singles. -- Nonconference UC Irvine 7, UC Riverside 0 Singles -- Endrikat (UCI)

The UC Irvine baseball team has a score to settle tonight when it travels to the Riverside Sports Complex for a nonconference game against Big West Conference rival UC Riverside at 6. The Highlanders (16-25) won two of three from the Anteaters (30-12) in their conference series, April 18-20 at Anteater Ballpark. UCI will start sophomore Tom Calahan (0-1 with a 2.49 earned-run average), who has not allowed an earned run in his last eight appearances. It?s Calahan?s second career start.

The UC Irvine Anteaters (8-7-4, 3-3-3) and the UC Riverside Highlanders (3-12-4, 1-7-1) finished in a scoreless draw at Anteater Stadium Wednesday night. Freshman goalkeeper Ryan Mathy earned his second shutout of his career finishing with eight saves on the night. The Anteaters played with 10 players for the final 22 minutes of regulation as well as the two overtime periods. Goalkeeper Josh Alexander earned a shutout as well with 10 saves on the night for UCR. Senior Scott Bowman playing in his final game at Anteater Stadium led both teams with six shots on the night.

UC Irvine's women's soccer team was a 1-0 winner Friday night as the Anteaters turned back UC Riverside in Big West Conference play at Anteaters Stadium. Freshman Tiffany Scheibley broke up the scoreless duel in the 68th minute with her first collegiate goalwhen she penetrated the Riverside box and drove in an unassisted header. The victory gives the Anteaters, 9-5-1 overall, a 3-1-1 Big West mark. UC Riverside drops to 6-6-1, 3-0-1 in the Big West.

With its next game six days away, the UC Irvine baseball team can use a little reflection time to spin their recent struggles, which continued Saturday with a 4-3 nonconference loss to visiting San Diego State. Despite dropping the three-game series to the Aztecs, losing three of four games during the week and falling to 2-6 in their last eight nonconference games, the Anteaters actually might have improved their position in the Big West Conference standings by being the odd team out of the weekend fray in the nine-team conference.

WOMEN'S WATER POLO UC Irvine 10, Long Beach State 7 The host Anteaters clinched their third straight Big West Conference regular-season championship behind four goals from Danielle Warde and eight saves from Jillian Yocum on Thursday. No. 6-ranked UCI (21-7, 5-0 in conference) has now won five Big West regular-season crowns. The 'Eaters led, 3-1, after the first period and were not outscored in any of the three remaining quarters. No. 10-ranked Long Beach State fell to 18-10, 2-3. UCI finishes the regular season Friday at 7 p.m. against No. 12 Loyola Marymount at Anteater Aquatics Complex.

SOFTBALL Doubleheader Host Vanguard University swept two nonconference games Wednesday, topping Azusa Pacific, 8-0, in the first game and 3-2 in the second. Breanne Gomez was two for two with three runs batted in, while Brittany Colenzo was two for three with three RBIs in the opener. Rachel Stalford pitched a five-inning complete-game shutout, allowing five hits, walking one and striking out six. In the second game, Shelby Kuryllo was two for three and Gomez had the lone RBI to help Shelby Ross (5-1)

A baseball adage as old as wool uniforms states that the breaks of the game, the highs and lows, the hot and cold stretches, all even out over the course of a season. UC Irvine junior first baseman Connor Spencer can, thank goodness, finally attest to just that. After beginning the season hitless in his first 19 at-bats, the 2013 Big West Conference batting champion has righted himself. He is 11 for 16 over his last four games, including a two-for-four performance Saturday to lead the Anteaters to a 4-2 win over visiting UC Riverside.

ANAHEIM - Consistency is among the requirements for postseason success and the UC Irvine Anteaters proved, at least through one game of the Big West Conference men's basketball tournament, that they are who we thought they were. Top-seeded UCI handled No. 8-seeded UC Riverside, 63-43, in the quarterfinals Thursday at Honda Center, virtually mirroring two previous wins over the Highlanders this season. The win propels UCI (23-10) and ranked No. 14 in the CollegeInsider.com mid-major poll, into a semifinal clash Friday at 6:30 p.m. against No. 7-seeded Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.

MEN'S BASKETBALL UC Irvine 61, UC Davis 59 DAVIS — Senior Chris McNealy had 11 points and eight rebounds to lead the visiting Anteaters in the Big West Conference game Saturday. UCI (16-9, 7-2 in conference) trailed by 11 early in the second half, but chipped away before taking a 55-53 advantage with 6:13 left on a layup by Mamadou Ndiaye. UC Davis (8-16, 3-6) led, 59-57, with 2:49 left, but Luke Nelson had three straight points to put UCI ahead for good. The win propelled UCI into sole possession of first place in conference.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL UC Irvine 83, Cal State Northridge 73 NORTHRIDGE — Senior forward Camille Buckley poured in a career-high 31 points for the Anteaters in the Big West Conference game at the Matadome Thursday. Buckley dominated the game with a season-high 21 rebounds, 14 of her rebounds were on the defensive glass. UC Irvine evens its season record to 9-9 overall and 2-2 in the Big West. With the victory, UCI matches last year's win total of nine. It is the first conference win on the road since the Anteaters beat UC Riverside on Feb. 14, 2013.
