The UC Irvine Anteaters knocked off the visiting Nebraska Cornhuskers in women's tennis Sunday, 4-3, to improve to 10-7. Jenny Bowman, Anna Bentzer and Hui Leow, playing in the 2-3-4 slots, picked up singles victories, and Benzter and Christie Posner, along with Leow and Amy Tranckino were victorious in doubles. -- Nonconference UCI 4, Nebraska 3 Singles -- Ostermann (N) def. ANTEATER BALLPARK -- Washington State University's Cougars struck for three runs in the first inning, scored two more in the second and never trailed en route to an 8-4 nonconference baseball victory over the UC Irvine Anteaters Friday night. The Cougars unleased a 12-hit attack behind starter Tony Banaszak, who went the distance, striking out five and walking two, while allowing four earned runs for his first victory in seven decisions. Jordan Szabo, Kyle Ryckebosch and B. J. Eucce all went 2 for 4 with a double for the Anteaters.

Golfers bound for UCI Men’s golfers Allan Jun and Pete Fernandez have signed national letters of intent to play at UC Irvine, Anteaters Coach Paul Smolinski announced. Jun, an Oceanside resident, is competing for El Camino High and is ranked No. 32 nationally in the Boys’ Golfweek rankings and No. 82 in the Junior Golf Scoreboard rankings. He won the Future Champions Golf San Diego Junior Masters in July and the San Diego Junior Golf Assn. Paul Benoit Memorial in May. He also qualified for the USGA Junior Amateur in July.

Corona del Mar High product Juliane Piggott will transfer from UCLA to play women’s volleyball at UC Irvine, Anteaters Coach Paula Weishoff announced Monday. The 6-foot-2 outside hitter, the Newport-Mesa Player of the Year as a senior in 2006, played two seasons at UCLA. She averaged 1.98 kills per set last season, while posting 35 total blocks and nine ace serves. She was also the Pacific Coast League MVP and an All-CIF Southern Section performer at CdM. In other UCI women’s volleyball news, Chelsea Ellis, a 6-foot-3 middle blocker who was a junior last season, has left the program due to academic issues.

Conor Clifford, a 7-foot center who averaged 15 points, 9.4 rebounds, 2.3 blocked shots and shot 67% from the field for Ocean View High, has signed a National Letter of Intent to play men's basketball for UC Irvine, Anteaters Coach Russell Turner announced on Tuesday. "I'm really excited to add a true big man to our roster with the signing of Conor," Turner said of Clifford, who was named second-team All-CIF Southern Section Division 2AA after helping the Seahawks finish 24-4. "Conor is a tremendous player, student and person of incredible character.

UC Irvine's Anteaters are about to start chowing down on a lot more oranges. Anteater athletes planted a grove of the citrus-bearing trees Wednesday afternoon near the Crawford Athletics Complex along West Peltason Drive. "They will grow there for years and years," said women's tennis team member Stephanie Hammel of the trees. "The fruit will give members of the community or athletes the opportunity to come here, pick the fruit and enjoy it. " The 24 trees were donated by the Orange County Great Park and are part of a project to upgrade the pool score board and beautify the surrounding area, said Cathy Lawhon, university director of media relations and community outreach.

Alex Young, a 6-foot-1 point guard who was the 2011 Oregon 4A Player of the Year, has signed a national letter of intent with the UC Irvine men's basketball program. Young averaged 20.4 points, 8.4 rebounds, 5.0 assists and 2.1 steals as a junior last season at Phoenix High in Phoenix, Ore. He led the Pirates to their first state championship in 60 years. "I am truly excited to add Alex Young to our basketball family at UC Irvine," Anteaters Coach Russell Turner said. "He is a proven winner and brings the game and character qualities that will help us continue to elevate our program.

Four high school seniors have signed letters of intent to play women’s volleyball at UC Irvine, said Anteaters assistant coach and recruiting coordinator Sabrina Hernandez. Taylor Smith, a 6-foot right-side hitter from Archbishop Mitty High in San Jose, is an American Volleyball Coaches Assn. second-team All-American. Courtney Moeller, a 6-1 outside hitter from Canyon High in Anaheim was recently named a 2009 Senior Ace by PrepVolleyball.com, an honor recognizing the top seniors in the country.
