Former UC Irvine pitcher Mike Davern has signed a free-agent contract with the Chicago White Sox organization. Davern was tabbed as a College Summer League Top 10 Prospect by Baseball America after posting a 1.91 ERA with the Wilson Tobs of the Coastal Plains League this summer. The right-hander saw limited time on the mound for the Anteaters in 2002, pitching in four innings and striking out five. He allowed two runs on six hits for a 4.50 ERA and finished with an 0-1 record last season.

BERLIN — Corona del Mar High product John Mann, as well as UC Irvine graduate Dreason Barry, helped the United States men's senior national water polo team to a fifth-place finish at the FINA World League Super Finals. Team USA went 3-3 at the tournament, which finished Sunday in Germany. Mann, who graduated from CdM in 2003, scored two goals in a tournament-ending, 9-6 victory over Romania on Sunday. Mann was also a three-time All-American at UC Berkeley, where he helped the Golden Bears win the 2006 NCAA Division I championship.

Kerry Vandell, an influential professor from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, has been appointed executive director of the new Center for Real Estate at UC Irvine's Paul Merage School of Business. Vandell, who will also serve as a professor of finance, plans to begin his tenure in July 2006. At Wisconsin, he directed the Graaskamp real estate program, one of the most heralded business education programs in the country. As head of the UCI real estate program, he will preside over the training of graduate students preparing for careers in the real estate industry.

Jessica Ball, a second-team CIF Southern Section Division I selection for Newport Harbor High last year, signed her letter of intent Wednesday to play water polo for the University of Michigan next year. Ball, also a two-time All-Sea View League performer for the Sailors, visited the Michigan campus at Ann Arbor two months ago. She said she was impressed with the school spirit and the attention to academics. She said she will also be eased into the college life because her older sister, Erin, attends Michigan.

Williams -- Jamison Richard and Erika Williams of Corona del Mar have announced the engagement of their daughter, Heidi Erika Williams to Eliot Alden Jamison of San Francisco. The bride-elect graduated from Corona del Mar High School and Brown University, and is enrolled at Columbia University, pursuing a master's degree in international educational development. The future bridegroom, son of Dean Jamison of Pacific Palisades and Washington, D.C., and Joanne Leslie of Santa Monica, graduated from Beverly Hills High School, Columbia University and the Haas School of Business at the UC Berkeley.

U.S. Bank names top commercial banker U.S. Bancorp, headquartered in Minneapolis, announced Friday that Steve Takei has been named to U.S. Bank's top commercial banking position in Orange County. Takei, 49, has been assigned to U.S. Bank's Newport Beach office. Takei is slated to report to Todd Hollander, the bank's market president for Orange County and the Inland Empire. Takei's most recent experience was as a senior vice president in Bank of America's healthcare group.

UC Irvine won the Badminton Collegiate Nationals at Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania recently, making it the second straight year the Anteaters have won the event. “We were confident going into the competition. We sent 11 players hoping to defend our title and won in a narrow victory,” said Alexandra Easton, UCI’s badminton club treasurer. “It was a great opportunity to represent UC Irvine on the East Coast and return home with the national title.” This is UCI’s third national championship in the last five years.

Hamilton-Bertea Kathy and John Hamilton of Corona del Mar announce the engagement of their daughter, Jill Christine Hamilton of Corona del Mar, to Black Cameron Bertea of Corona del Mar. The bride-elected graduated from Corona del Mar High School and the University of Southern California. The future bridegroom, son of Hyla and Richard Bertea of Corona del Mar, graduated from Corona del Mar High School and the University of Colorado. A May 10 wedding is planned in the Laguna Presbyterian Church in Laguna Beach.

Mike and Kate Smith are proud to announce the graduations of their Daughter Hailey Isles Smith from Newport Harbor High School and their Son Jake Wyatt Smith from Ensign Intermediate School. Hailey graduates top of her class while lettering in Academics and Cross Country and running Track. She is a proud member of the National Honor Society and other on campus clubs. Jake graduates top of his class with membership in the National Junior Honor Society while playing Soccer and running Cross Country and Track.

Allison Stokke never fancied herself as the sort of athlete who peaked just as she was beginning. But, in a way, she did. Newport Harbor High's Female Athlete of the Year won the most significant prize of her high school career, a CIF state title, as a freshman. She spent the next three years trying to reclaim that glory, but found herself falling short. Despite a disappointing finish to her senior year — she finished fourth at this year's CIF state final — Stokke has emerged stronger than ever, and ready to start vaulting for UC Berkeley.
