Former Newport Harbor High pole vaulter Allison Stokke will be on ESPN Radio's The Big Show with Steve Mason and John Ireland today. The show is broadcast on 710 AM, from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. Stokke, who earlier this year became a Internet celebrity because of her looks, will continue her pole vaulting career this year at UC Berkeley. Stokke, 18, drew attention from the national news media because the stir her pictures was causing was unsought and unprovoked. She won the CIF state title her freshman year with a clearance of 12 feet, eight inches, but never reclaimed the top spot in the state while at Newport Harbor.

More often than not, Cecil Whiteside hit whoever carried the football backward when he starred at Newport Harbor High. The recent high school graduate is now the one taking a step back before he gets on the field for Cal. The touted linebacker recruit has to sit out his first year due to academic issues. Cal Coach Jeff Tedford told the San Jose Mercury News that Whiteside will grayshirt this season. Tedford added that Whiteside most likely would enroll at a junior college in the fall before coming to Cal in the spring.

Here’s a conversation starter: The University of California was selfish this year. More than 10,000 high school students are stuck in limbo right now, waiting with bated breath for the ever-so-slight possibility they have a chance of admission to the UC institution that wait-listed them. In a completely self-serving move, the UC chose to implement a wait-list system that selective private universities have been using for years. This decision was made in the same year that one in four UC admits was an out-of-state or international applicant.
