Week Zero meant more than one zero to the Estancia High football team last year when it arrived at the game. At game time, it was still 100 degrees. The Eagles got to their first game in collared shirts, ties and pants, pregame attire four hours before kickoff. No shirts and shorts seemed more appropriate. “That took so much out of us that I refused to play in [San Bernardino], or anywhere it’s 100 degrees at the start,” said Coach Mike Bargas, referring to last season’s opener at Aquinas.

COSTA MESA — The fire alarm flashed before the football game started at Estancia High. No one figured a way to turn it off. The Eagles obviously played with fire in their season opener. Trabuco Hills, ranked No. 5 in the CIF Southern Section Southwest Division preseason coaches’ poll, proved to be too dangerous. Estancia complained about the 100-degree heat in last year’s opener on the road. This year at home, not enough help. No one came to the rescue as the Mustangs stomped their way to a 42-7 nonleague victory at Jim Scott Stadium Thursday night.

CORONA DEL MAR - In quite a few boys' volleyball matches this season, Corona del Mar High has relied quite heavily on outside hitter Parker Brown and middle blocker Jack Reed. While that was also the case in Saturday night's 25-19, 25-23, 25-19 CIF Southern Section Division 2 quarterfinal win over Trabuco Hills at CdM, it took a total team effort during the most crucial moments. And that team effort will take the Sea Kings to another home match, a semifinal showdown at 7 p.m. on Tuesday.

Senior Mike Payne led the Mustangs (2-2) with 14 points, while Steve Whittaker added 11 and Chad Vakili had 10. "Trabuco Hills is a very good team," Mesa Coach Bob Serven said. "In fact, there was a lot of good teams in this tournament. We would have liked to have won the consolation round, but considering how young we are, we played pretty well."

The Newport Harbor High football team kicks off the season tonight against a program it last dropped an opener to eight years ago. The Sailors go for their eighth straight opening-game win when they play host to Trabuco Hills at 7. The streak started after Newport Harbor fell to the Mustangs in 2002, then the Sailors beat them the following season. Those two meetings are the only times Newport Harbor and Trabuco Hills have played. They might play again in November. The Mustangs moved to the South Coast League, which is part of the CIF Southern Section Pac-5 Division playoffs.

Newport Harbor's explosive victory over highly regarded Marina last week lends credibility to the notion the Sailors' "slow" start in a scrimmage with Mission Viejo and a 16-8 loss in the season opener against Trabuco Hills speaks more to the quality of the competition than the lack of savvy in the Sailors' game. Dartagnan Johnson ran for 206 yards and three TDs on 23 carries last year in this game. Newport Harbor, despite its season-opening loss at Trabuco Hills, is ranked No. 3 in CIF Division VI. Quarterback Michael McDonald could hold the key to success for the Sailors.

MISSION VIEJO - The last time the Newport Harbor High football team opened the season with a loss was nine years ago. And it came at the hands of Trabuco Hills. The Mustangs once again stood in the way of the Sailors kicking off the season with a win. They did it convincing fashion on Thursday night, running past and through Newport Harbor en route to a 35-14 home victory. “We seemed a step slow,” Newport Harbor Coach Jeff Brinkley said. “You can see the difference between a veteran team and a young, inexperienced team.

Sierra Michaelsen took up kenpo-style karate in October. She's an orange belt. But her time in the dojo is currently on hiatus as she focuses on a more pressing matter, her senior year for the Newport Harbor High girls' lacrosse team. "Right before I left I was going to reach the intermediate level," Michaelsen said. "I get to wait until the summer now. " She doesn't mind the break. She wants the Sailors, who play Corona del Mar in the Battle of the Bay Friday night at 5 at Newport Harbor, to extend their season as long as possible.

NEWPORT BEACH — The scoreboard went out before the start of the second half of Newport Harbor High's season opener. For the Sailors' sake, they did not really have to put up numbers on their scoreboard again. The defense and special teams bailed Newport Harbor out of trouble on numerous occasions on the football field Thursday night. Special teams recorded a touchdown in the second quarter to give the Sailors enough points to beat Trabuco Hills. Newport Harbor added a touchdown late as it won, 17-6, making it eight straight years the Sailors have kicked off the season with a victory.

Excitement, anxiety and nervousness shot through Sierra Michaelsen’s body and she wasn’t even on a lacrosse playing field. This was away from the grass, and instead at John Wayne Airport, where Michaelsen was boarding a flight to Maryland, leaving her mother, Nancy Lance, and stepfather, Darren Lance. This would be the first time she would be away from home for more than a week, on her own, without supervision. All grown up at age 16. But as she approached closer to her destination the nerves subsided.

Scott Orloff, the defensive coordinator for the Orange Coast College football team the last four seasons, has left the Pirates to become head coach at Trabuco Hills High, OCC Coach Mike Taylor confirmed Monday. Taylor said John Young, whose second tenure as an OCC assistant began last season when he guided the linebackers, will take over as defensive coordinator. Taylor said Young will also tutor the secondary in 2010 and Taylor will coach the linebackers. Orloff, a former prep head coach at Dana Hills and Santa Ana Valley, came to OCC in 2002 as the secondary coach.
