INSIDE CITY HALL Here are some of the items the commission considered at its Monday meeting. MOBILE HOME ORDINANCE The commission reconsidered an ordinance that replaces and expands the city's procedures for mobile home park conversions. The commission will discuss whether a town hall meeting is necessary before it votes. The City Council wants new rules to give it more authority over the conversion process and to delineate the procedure for mobile home park closures.

June Casagrande Anyone who's wondered why Marine Avenue has been lined with mismatched benches for the last few months is about to get an answer. And anyone who has an opinion on which style should be selected may get his or her chance to help pick the design. Balboa Island will hold a town hall meeting on Sunday to select styles of benches, trash receptacles and sidewalk tree grates for the beautification project planned for Marine Avenue by the Balboa Island Beautification Committee and other groups.

Facing a national economic crisis, the likes of which we haven’t seen for going on a century, hasn’t seemed to cool the ardor or divert the attention of about half of our voting citizens who are determined to make sure that same-sex marriages will never be allowed to take root in California. Banks may shut down and Osama bin Laden run free, but at least we’ve kept marriage sacrosanct. That, of course, is if Proposition 8 — which would change the state Constitution to deny same-sex couples the right of marriage — passes Nov. 4. The polls predict it will be close.

June Casagrande Despite staff worries that not enough residents weighed in on a community center and a number of other concerns, the City Council approved creating a $7-million community center. "I question whether we reached the full community out there," said Assistant City Manager Dave Kiff, who had recommended that the council consider conducting a mail ballot of neighborhoods to see how many households would support building the center near Newport Coast Drive and San Joaquin Hills Road.

When I got a phone call asking if I would like to write a column about educational issues, I said I would try writing six. This column is number 100. Sometimes, I get crazy with all of the issues that affect the education of our children: what should the school calendar look like, what do we do if the school facilities get any worse, what new mandates will be foisted on us from a politician who has never been in a...

Wednesday’s town hall meeting with President Obama yielded some happy endings and some, uh, not-so-happy ones. In fact, in Assemblyman Van Tran’s case it was downright embarrassing. Tran, who was one of the area’s earliest and most ardent supporters of John McCain’s presidential bid — even in the darkest hours of his candidacy — was turned away Wednesday when he tried to attend the rally. Looks like it was a big misunderstanding and not some dark conspiracy to rebuff a McCain booster.

I have read the articles regarding Costa Mesa Mayor Allan Mansoor’s non-attendance at the recent town hall meeting in Costa Mesa featuring President Obama. The mayor was widely reprimanded. The mayor was open about his reasons and stood on his principles. He stated that he does not agree with Obama’s politics, and I am sure he did not want to imply he did by appearing at the meeting. The city needs a mayor who can stand up to public pressure, and Mansoor is exactly the type of representative we want.
