NEWPORT BEACH - David Frost won the 19th Toshiba Classic, holding off Fred Couples Sunday at Newport Beach Country Club. Frost, a 10-time PGA Tour winner, claimed his fourth victory on the Champions Tour, his second in his last six starts. The par-three, 185-yard 17th is known as the signature hole at Newport Beach Country Club. It also became David Frost's as he sank a sensational 50-foot putt on his way to victory Sunday. The birdie was the highlight of his wire-to-wire win at the 19th Toshiba Classic. Frost shot a 65 to tie the tournament record at 19-under-par 194 and hold off Fred Couples, who trailed by one shot entering the final round but finished five shots behind. Peter Senior and Jay Haas, who shot 194 in 2007, finished tied for third place, eight shots behind Frost.

NEWPORT BEACH - David Frost has had a hot start on the Champions Tour this year with three top-10 finishes in as many events, but a win has eluded him. He was able to stay loose despite cold temperatures at Newport Beach Country Club to finish as the first-round leader, carding an eight-under-par 63 Friday at the Toshiba Classic. Fred Couples is one shot behind and Jim Gallagher Jr. is at 66 heading into the second of three rounds. Frost's bogey-free round featured eight birdies, including five on the back nine.

NEWPORT BEACH - If the second round is any indication of what to expect from David Frost and Fred Couples on Sunday, then the final round at the 19th Toshiba Classic should be one to watch. Or as Frost said, "it will be a fun day. " Frost sank a 15-foot eagle putt on No. 18 to carry a one-shot lead against Couples, who has a strong backing from fans at Newport Beach Country Club. "It was a day when Freddy and I battled it out," said Frost, a 10-time PGA Tour winner who's had six top-10 finishes in his past six events on the Champions Tour.

Rocco Mediate and Steve Elkington, both making their debuts at the Toshiba Classic, said they have always looked up to Watson as a hero. When asked how that made him feel, Watson said, "Old. " Watson said he watched a recent David Feherty interview of Jack Nicklaus, when the golf legend was asked if he could still play.
