IRVINE — Swimming against the current of a seriously upgraded schedule, the UC Irvine women's volleyball team continued to sink beneath the surface Tuesday night. But second-year coach Paula Weishoff said she hopes playing better competition will eventually be a weight belt the Anteaters can release and then rise in the Big West Conference standings. In the home opener against No. 23-ranked San Diego, however, UCI players performed as if an anchor was chained to their collective ankles.

IRVINE - It was a loss about which UC Irvine baseball coach Mike Gillespie wanted to be anything but trivial. San Diego junior third baseman Kris Bryant launched his NCAA-leading 30th home run of the season in the second inning to conclude his regular-season with seven homers in his last six games.

SAN DIEGO — It's not often that UC Irvine baseball coach Mike Gillespie is prompted by the play of his team to be brief in the postgame meeting. But with a 5-0 nonconference triumph at the University of San Diego on Tuesday, the Anteaters left the veteran head man little with which to quibble. "I thought it was one of those well-dones," Gillespie said after four pitchers combined on a four-hitter that was the UCI's staff's third shutout of the season. SAN DIEGO — The fact that UC Irvine’s nonconference baseball game against host San Diego ended at the beginning of rush hour, had little to do with the Anteaters’ delayed return to their bus for the 90-mile ride home Tuesday. Instead, the UCI position players remained parked in shallow right field for the traditional postgame discussion in which Coach Mike Gillespie required a few extra minutes to go over the many things his offense and defense failed to execute in a 7-1 loss to the No. 12-ranked Toreros (28-11)
