NEWPORT BEACH ? Toshiba Classic attendees can be more than just fans of defending champion Mark Johnson. They can join his "Brew Crew." One of the vendor booths at the Newport Beach Country Club is offering hats for "Mark Johnson's Brew Crew." The hats, which sell for $15, have "2005 Toshiba Classic Champion" sewn into the side and many are autographed by Johnson. All proceeds from hat sales go to benefit the junior golf program at Silver Lakes Golf Club in Helendale, Johnson's home course.

Friday's showers gave way Saturday, but the conditions weren't any easier for the Toshiba Classic field at the Newport Beach Country Club. Judging from the scores, the conditions were a little tougher on the golfers. Though Friday's top score was Bob Eastwood's six-under-par 65, Saturday's was 67, shot by Tom Purtzer, Jay Haas, Allen Doyle, Jose Maria Canizares and Mike McCullough. Canizares had the tournament's first hole-in-one on the eighth, when he used a five-iron to hit the ball 187 yards into the cup. Purtzer, who shot a 68 on Friday, has a two-day score of 135 and goes into today's action tied for the lead with Bob Eastwood and Graham Marsh.

By modern standards, the course at Newport Beach Country Club would be considered a throwback. Originally designed by William Bell in 1952, the course has its scenic trees and rolling terrain and classic touches. That's not to say, however, it doesn't know how to bare its fangs sometimes. Three redesigns ? one by Harry Rainville in 1973 and two by Ted Robinson in 1985 and 1998 ? have kept the course up to date and a challenge. In previous years, club officials enjoyed pointing out that winning scores at the Toshiba Classic were consistently in the 10- to 12-under range.

This is the 15th year for the Toshiba Classic and it seems like the previous 14 tournaments have yielded some memorable moments. I have taken the top 10 of them.   No. 10: Canizares-Morgan Playoff — It appeared Dr. Gil Morgan was eyeing a victory at the 2001 event, but Jose Maria Canizares overcame a five-shot deficit to force a playoff with Morgan. It looked like Canizares would end the playoff on the first hole, but lipped out his birdie putt. He had lip outs on the next three holes.

NEWPORT BEACH — Hopefully the sprinklers work at Newport Beach Country Club because the Champions Tour field in the Toshiba Classic torched the course in the first round Friday. A Toshiba-record six players shot six-under-par 65. While not near a record for a round at the tournament it does put the six on pace to break the three-round tournament record of 15-under. Eduardo Romero, Fuzzy Zoeller, Ben Crenshaw, Jay Haas, Tom Purtzer, the 2004 Toshiba Classic champion, and R.W. Eaks reached their 65s in a variety of ways.
