Though summer is over and most children are back in school, golf should not be one of the forgotten activities that stop after Labor Day. Now might actually be one of the better times to get a child involved in the game or build on the lessons he or she had during the summer. John Leonard has been giving lessons to children ever since Newport Beach Golf Course opened in June of 1976. While some professionals shy away from teaching children, Leonard has embraced it for more than three decades.

At 7 years old, Stewart Hagestad experienced a moment that would influence him forever. He saw an up-and-coming high school golfer playing twilight rounds on his home course at Big Canyon Country Club. The amateur was an emerging phenom named Tiger Woods. All Hagestad knew about Woods was that he was an honorary member of the club and that he was headed to Stanford. But it was the image of Woods that peaked Hagestad?s youthful intrigue. Hagestad watched the persistent Woods play the worst of two tee-shots at sunset by himself, giving the 7-year-old something to remember.

Jack Maurer sits at his laptop and pounds out an invoice. He has to keep track of his budget, as well as his own cash flow, before he turns to other business, such as writing a letter to Apple and going over a response from Nike. In the early morning hours last Saturday one of the world’s most famous athletes walked on to the greens of the Mesa Verde Country Club in Costa Mesa. Tiger Woods , golfer extraordinaire, joined fellow stars John Cook , Fred Couples and a field of enthusiastic local players for a day of golf and philanthropy that would raise more than $1 million for programs supported by the Tiger Woods Learning Center. COSTA MESA — Tom Sargent, the head pro at the Mesa Verde Country Club, spent most of Friday night tossing and turning, thinking of the chaos that might occur with Tiger Woods coming to the golf course. Sargent did all he could to protect the man who has become known as the world's greatest golfer. He had ropes surrounding the tee area, and security guards visible from every angle. Still, that didn't stifle Woods's humor and personable tone during the hour-long golf clinic he gave to about 1,000 on Saturday morning.

Tiger Woods is legit even if he did big-time the Daily Pilot. What I mean by legit is, he's the real deal. There's hardly anything fake about him. He didn't hold much back with the crowd during his driving demonstration that also including fellow pro Fred Couples at the Mesa Verde Country Club on Saturday morning. His people denied the Daily Pilot a one-on-one interview, and ideal access for photography. In the end, not a great story for media types. But Saturday morning wasn't really about notebooks and tape recorders.
