Danette Goulet SCHOOL'S OUT is a weekly feature in which Daily Pilot education writer Danette Goulet visits a summer camp within the Newport-Mesa area and writes about her experience. A row of 3- and 4-foot-tall golfers stood poised and ready. At a shout of "Tiger Woods!" they swung clubs nearly as long as they were tall. They aimed at small, plastic balls at their feet on green mats. The balls flew in all directions -- except for those that didn't move at all. Monday marked the first day of a weeklong Seahawks golf camp for children at Bob Henry Park in Newport Beach.

Patrick Laverty The next Tiger Woods isn't likely to be found at the city of Newport Beach's recreational golf classes, but then again, there likely isn't ever going to be another Tiger Woods. For most ordinary golfers, simply breaking 100 would be nice and before that can be done, one must know how to hold the club, how to stand and where to position the ball. The teaching of those fundamentals can be found in the golf classes held at Newport Beach Golf Course Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.

Compiled by Daily Pilot staff The Daily Pilot received what appeared at first to be a big Christmas package, until the cardboard box was opened. Inside was the 17-volume environmental report on the proposed reuse for El Toro Marine base. They collectively weighed more than 60 pounds. It took two strapping editors to carry the box of goodies up to the reporting staff, who did not fight over who got to write the story. Where's Tiger? This admission from Tibet’s exiled spiritual leader came after the part-time Corona del Mar resident confessed on national television to having had extra-marital liaisons. It teaches me to stop following every impulse and to learn restraint.

As Rick Reilly talked about his dreams to be a pro golfer or someone like Derek Jeter, it was difficult to ignore the sign near where he stood at the Newport Beach Library Saturday afternoon. The sign read, "The Witte Lectures: A forum for ideas with distinguished speakers. " Distinguished? It probably wouldn't be appropriate to describe any sportswriter as distinguished, even Reilly. He was more of a comedian during his, "lecture," when he cracked jokes about Kobe Bryant - "Does Kobe hang around at this library?

Next time they won't overlook the skinny kid. Ryan O'Connor, who spreads out 145 pounds on his 6-foot frame, might not pose an intimidating presence at first glance, but put a golf club in his hands and everything changes. O'Connor, who will enter his junior year at Woodbridge High next month, schooled the field when he became the youngest golfer — at age 16 — to win the Tustin Ranch Golf Club's 2011 Club Championship in late-July. O'Connor shot a two-round total of 156, rallying from a two-stroke deficit with a 76 in the final round to win by three strokes.

NEWPORT BEACH — The winning has been long over for Lee Trevino. The competitive fire is hardly burning, he admits. The 71-year-old hall of famer says the desire for competitive golf left when he was 63. But Trevino still displays a strong love for the game. He showed that passion, and plenty of personality, during a 45-minute interview with the media at Newport Beach Country Club Wednesday. He chose to play his only Champions Tour event at the Toshiba Classic, and it appears he's making the most of his one stop.

Breakfast With A Champion is an annual event during Toshiba Classic week in Newport Beach. The event is presented by the Allergan Foundation. Allergan, the pharmaceutical giant, is known for skin enhancements, including Botox. So every year, there is at least one joke about that, usually in relation to Newport Beach and Orange County. Tom Kite, the World Golf Hall of Famer and featured speaker Tuesday morning, joked about it too, but referred to the tour he's playing on. "The Champions Tour is our Botox," Kite said of the tour for golfers 50 and older.

NEWPORT BEACH — When Fuzzy Zoeller made comments about Tiger Woods back in 1997, they got him in trouble and he had to apologize. But the colorful Zoeller, the 1979 Masters Champion, didn’t hesitate to talk Tiger Tuesday morning on the rooftop of a hotel in Newport Beach. Zoeller spoke in a somewhat defensive tone when he was asked to give his take on Woods, who has been rehabilitating his career since a downfall that stemmed from infidelity. Woods, a part-time Corona del Mar resident, is making his return to a routine that involves golf and fitness, according to a report from the Associated Press.

While driving around Newport Beach recently I noticed an automobile that had the word “FLUENT” on its license plate. The more I reflected upon it, the more I thought that this was neat. In fact, I wish I had been able to talk to the owner to ask what the word meant to him or her. A dictionary would say the word means to flow or to be spoken or written with ease. But to me the word “fluent” means more than that. To me, it means you are living your life at peace with yourself, in a meaningful and gratifying way. Maybe that is not what the owner means, and maybe it would be best that I never find out. Nevertheless, that is what the word means to me. All of this started me thinking about a quote I saw from two extremely well-known sports figures in one of last week’s newspapers.

I was desperately looking last week for a way to connect the Tiger Woods saga to our neck of the woods when I read in the Daily Pilot that he is a ?part-time Corona del Mar resident,? and that one or more of his liaisons took place at the Island Hotel in Newport Beach. For the record, I do not play golf, do not follow golf and prior to his auto accident, the only thought I had about Tiger Woods was that his endorsement contract probably creates an increase in the cost of Nike clothing.
