Rick Devereux When the ball is handed off to No. 44 for Newport Harbor High, the crowd will start screaming, "Moooooose." Trevor Theriot inevitably runs trough an arm tackle or two, lowers his shoulder to plow past an defender, and finally punches out a stiff arm in the open field to gain even more yards. But this scene wasn't always the case. Theriot has been the fullback paving the way for other runners to gain yards and get the glory. But with projected starter Ryan Rippon out with ligament damage to his knee, Theriot is now the one getting the attention.

There seems to have been at least one test on every level Trevor Theriot has played. Another one comes today in the form of Pro Day at UCLA. The former Newport Harbor High football standout is trying to make it to the NFL as a fullback. That’s a big-time test in itself, but his mentality is that his one shot comes today. He believes that much of what the future holds, lies in the speed, strength and agility drills he’ll perform in Westwood. “I never realized it would all come down to one day,” he says.

It’s safe to say that Tina Theriot’s blood runs blue. The Corona del Mar High senior will compete in track and field at UCLA, her father, Brian, said. Tina’s older brother, Trevor, is out with an injury, but is on the Bruins’ football team, and her father was a captain of the UCLA track and field team in 1980 and a member of the 1978 NCAA championship team. Tina Theriot was a captain for the CdM girls’ cross country team that won the CIF Division III state title and Southern Section championship in Division III. She was also named Most Valuable Sprinter by CdM for her efforts in track and field last spring.

UCLA fullback Trevor Theriot, a former Newport Harbor High standout, will be out for the season after suffering a torn ligament in his right knee, the Los Angeles Times reported Thursday. Theriot, a redshirt junior who earned a full-ride scholarship last year, had compiled 60 yards on three kickoff returns and one catch for five yards through three games. Theriot, who was named the CIF Southern Section Division VI Co-Offensive Player of the Year in 2004, played as the starting fullback for UCLA last season.

For Tina and Bucko Theriot, sibling rivalry is institutionalized. Literally. Tina is a junior at Corona del Mar High, while her brother Bucko is a senior at Back Bay rival Newport Harbor. They both compete in track and field. Somehow, the family ended up splitting by gender across the bay. Tina and Bucko are the latest products of a lineage of Theriot athletes. Their oldest brother, Trevor, was a standout football player for the Tars. He now plays fullback at UCLA.

At the point of impact, when helmets and the combined energy of close to 500 pounds of highly motivated humanity converge in one of society’s last sanctioned acts of savagery, the paperwork matters not. So it is that UCLA sophomore fullback Trevor Theriot, the rarest of athletic anomalies as a walk-on starter, struggles for supremacy every Saturday with defenders who are rewarded for their football performance with a free education at...

Newport Harbor High product Trevor Theriot, the Newport-Mesa Player of the Year as a senior in 2004, is scheduled to start at fullback in the UCLA football team’s season opener Saturday at Pac-10 rival Stanford. The 6-foot, 229-pound Theriot, a redshirt sophomore who began his career in Westwood as a walk-on, played in four games in 2006, two on offense and two on special teams. Theriot did not carry the ball or catch a pass last season, but that figures to change. He will also play on the kickoff return and punt units for the Bruins.
