NEWPORT BEACH — Newport Harbor High girls' soccer coach Larry Draluck has been known to try to motivate his players with metaphors, axioms and the occasional tall tale. So it was not surprising when he got philosophical following the Sailors' 4-0 loss to visiting Tesoro in the second round of the CIF Southern Section Division I playoffs on Tuesday. It is, of course, rather natural to wax positively about a team that made the playoffs for the first time in six seasons, then advanced past the first round, despite being the only team among the division's 33 playoff entries to enter the tournament with more than 10 losses.

At the end of a historic season in late December, reporters asked Coach Scott Meyer about next year. Can his football team repeat a perfect season? The Sea Kings had just beaten Atherton Sacred Heart Prep, 27-15, in the CIF State Division III Bowl Game to become the first team in the state to produce a 16-0 season. Meyer, standing inside the tunnel at the StubHub Center in Carson, tried not to look ahead. "We're not going to think about that for a little while," Meyer said back then, before going into the number of starters expected to return, 10 on defense and five on offense, and the challenging nonleague schedule next season.

Rick Devereux The final Corona del Mar High football game before Halloween figured to be a thriller, in more ways than one. With a festive halftime show and costumed venders working the concession stand, it was bound to be a freaky evening between the Sea Kings and Tesoro. The Titans held off CdM, 20-7, in a Pacific Coast League game at Newport Harbor High. It was anything but an easy win for the visitors. Tesoro (6-2, 3-0 in league) had to settle for a 45-yard field goal from Joe Robles after the CdM (4-4, 1-2)

Barry Faulkner The Corona del Mar High football team built at least some offensive momentum while clinching sole possession of second place in the Pacific Coast League with a 48-28 win over visiting Tesoro Friday at Newport Harbor High. But the Sea Kings (6-4, 4-1 in league) may have built a future enemy in the Titans (1-9, 0-5) and Coach Jim O'Connell, whose team scored 34% of its points for the season in its most effective offensive performance of the season.

For the Corona del Mar High football team, the light at the end of the Pacific Coast League tunnel is, in fact, obscured by an oncoming train. The league schedule forced the Sea Kings (3-3, 1-1 in league) to deal with PCL powers Northwood and Tesoro in the first half of their six-game league campaign. The latter half of that assignment, which began with a 21-0 road setback against Northwood Oct. 6, will occur Friday at Tesoro at 7 p.m. Tesoro (4-1, 1-0)

Steve Virgen A funny thing happened on the way to Corona del Mar High's quest for an undefeated season in Pacific Coast League boys and girls track and field. Jeritt Thayer -- yes, the same senior who plays shortstop on the CdM baseball team -- competed for the Sea Kings in a PCL dual meet against visiting Tesoro Thursday. He finished third in the 800 meters (2 minutes, 11.5 seconds) as he entered the event by chance. He came to support his friends on the track and field team and Coach Bill Sumner asked for his help.

A young Costa Mesa High girls' water polo team is even younger right now. The Mustangs have both of their senior starters out due to injury. The inexperience showed Wednesday night in the Lil' Pickle Classic tournament that Costa Mesa hosts each year. The Mustangs fell to Tesoro, 15-2, at their home pool after beating Etiwanda, 6-2, in their tournament opener. Costa Mesa (6-7) finished second in Pool B of the 15-team tournament. Coach Tim Postiff's club will play in a fifth-place semifinal match at 11 a.m. Saturday, back at Costa Mesa.

To fully understand the tears of vindication that flowed from Celia Duran following Estancia High's overtime victory over Tesoro in the title game of the Corona del Mar Tip-Off Tournament on Saturday night, one had to know about the tears that sprung from futility on the court six years previous. For it is only after one considers how far the Estancia High senior has come in the sport that ultimate appreciation can be conveyed. "When I was in the sixth grade, I liked soccer," said Duran, the 2012-13 Newport-Mesa Player of the Year, who has been the Eagles' unquestioned leader since her sophomore season.

There is a certain underdog mentality that the Estancia High girls' basketball team carries with it. The Eagles weren't supposed to win the Corona del Mar Tip-Off Tournament. They weren't even supposed to be in the championship game. "If you see us walking down the street, you're not like, 'Oh, those must be basketball players,'" senior guard Celia Duran said. "[We're] a bunch of goofballs. " But after Saturday night, they are a bunch of goofballs who are also champions. Estancia rallied from a 14-point third-quarter deficit to stun Tesoro in overtime, 69-67, and win the Tip-Off Tournament championship game at Northwood High.

LAS FLORES - The temperature dropped steeply as the sun went down Tuesday evening at Tesoro High. Costa Mesa High boys' water polo coach Justin Taylor tried to keep warm on the pool deck. Taylor is getting married in less than two weeks. He joked that the cold temperatures were giving him second thoughts about having his wedding at an outdoor venue. His Mustangs took a bit too long to heat up, too. Their season is over after they lost to host Tesoro, 19-11, in a CIF Southern Section Division III wild-card match.
