When the U.S. Olympic men's water polo team beat Hungary last month in an exhibition at Newport Harbor High, it was the first time the Americans had beaten the perennial power in 10 years. The American women, by contrast, are looking for their fourth victory over Hungary this week when they come to Newport Beach on Sunday. The U.S. Olympic women's water polo team plays Hungary at 3 p.m. Sunday at Corona del Mar High, the last of four exhibition games this week in the lead up to London.

Before the 2008 Olympics, Esther Lofgren prepared as best she could, trying to fulfill a dream she's had since she was 7. The announcement came and she soon learned that she missed the U.S. women's eight by one spot. The American rowers went on to win gold at the Beijing Olympics. However, this time it's Lofgren's turn to attempt to bring home a gold medal from the London Olympics. Lofgren has fulfilled her dream of making it to the Olympics. Lofgren, a Newport Harbor High alum who competed at Harvard, was named to the U.S. Olympic team for rowing on the women's eight, USRowing announced Friday.

NEWPORT BEACH - On this day, the power play was working for the U.S. men's water polo national team. In roughly two months, Team USA hopes to make an Olympic power play on an even bigger stage in London. Momentum could be gained from a good result Sunday afternoon. There the Americans were, in front of an overflow crowd estimated at 1,700 at Newport Harbor High. Their opponent was a familiar one, Hungary, a rematch of the 2008 Olympic gold-medal game won by the Hungarians.

LOS ANGELES - As the U.S. Olympic women's water polo team was named Thursday, Coach Adam Krikorian read off the names in alphabetical order. The first name was the former Corona del Mar High and USC standout, Tumua Anae. This led to a funny moment at the announcement at the LA84 Foundation. "It was a little awkward," Anae said. "He kind of just looked at me. I wasn't sure of the formality of it, if we were supposed to hug or shake hands. But I'm all about the hugs. " It makes sense.

Tish Venturini-Hoch spent Wednesday morning in front of the television watching her favorite soccer team with family. It's a much different view now on, what she calls, "the other side. " Venturini-Hoch, a Costa Mesa resident, played for the U.S. women's soccer team in 1999 when the Americans won the World Cup. She enjoyed the high-spirited atmosphere and huge support then. She's also taking pleasure as a fan now. "I'm having a ball watching this team," Venturini-Hoch said Wednesday after Team USA defeated France, 3-1, to advance to Sunday's World Cup final.

Brian Thornton always thought that by age 26, he'd be immersed in the real world, making a name and a career for himself that had nothing to do with squeezing off sets. Instead, he finds himself starting for the U.S. national men's volleyball team in the World League, which comes to Long Beach State's Walter Pyramid on Friday and Saturday at 7 p.m. Team USA will play Puerto Rico on both nights. Friday will, USA Coach Alan Knipe said, mark the eighth straight World League start for Thornton, who twice earned second-team All-American honors and helped lead UC Irvine to the program's first NCAA championship as a senior in 2007.
