The Newport-Mesa Tar Heels boys' fifth-grade All-Net team remained undefeated after beating the Yorba Linda Pumas Black, 52-29, and the RSM Titans, 51-27, last weekend in away games. The Tar Heels were paced by the guard play of Nico Dasca (9.5 points per game), Ethan Barnes (6 ppg), Luke Chelf (4 ppg) and Jake Hamilton (11 ppg), while Johnny King (7 rebounds per game, 7 ppg), DJ Rodman (5 rpg) and Adam Flood (6 ppg, 2 steals per game) manned the paint and played stifling defense.

The Newport-Mesa Tar Heels boys' fifth-grade team won the 2012 All-Net national championship last weekend in Brea capping off a stellar season for the team. The Tar Heels went 26-1 and won the All-Net league championship, All-Net Super Sectionals championship and All-Net national championship with a strong group of boys from the Newport-Mesa area. In pool play, the Tar Heels beat a solid team in the Vallejo Hustlers, 54-33, a familiar foe Placentia P-Town, 46-43, and Redwood, 57-29, to finish first in the pool.

The Newport-Mesa Tar Heels, a boys' fifth-grade All-Net basketball team, have improved to 7-1 on the season by beating TH Hoops, Wilmington Wolverines, La Mirada Matadores and NM Ballers over the last four weeks. The wins have put the local boys on the top of the 32-team division. The Tar Heels have been led in scoring by the backcourt trio of John Humphreys (13.1 points per game, 2.25 steals per game), Cade Overfelt (7.75 ppg, 2.0 spg) and Jack Rettig (7.125 ppg, 3.25 assists per game, 2.25 spg)

The Newport-Mesa All-Net fifth-grade boys' basketball team competed in last weekend's Swoosh Martin Luther King Classic in Downey and won the 11U division. The Tar Heels defeated IE Scorpions, SCV Playmakers and Camarillo Swoosh to win the tournament last weekend. Matt Olson led all scorers averaging 10 points per game and two rebounds per game while DJ Rodman (seven points per game and four rebounds per game) and Sam Barela (six ppg and two steals per game)

The Newport-Mesa Tar Heels boys fifth-grade team capped off an exciting season by winning a 2013 All-Net national championship at Fullerton College Sunday. The Tar Heels went 5-0 over the weekend in the top division and beat rival Yorba Linda Pumas twice to win the title. After placing second in regular-season play and in All-Net Sectionals, the boys from Newport-Mesa willed their way to the championship. In pool play, the Tar Heels opened with the previously undefeated Pumas, who were 18-0 coming into the game and had beaten the Tar Heels three times during the season and playoffs.

The Newport-Mesa Tar Heels All-Net fifth-grade boys' team started the season off with a bang going 4-0 last weekend in two separate shootouts. The Tar Heels beat Basketball U Blue and Basketball U Orange on Saturday and then swept El Toro and Rock Solid on Sunday. The Tar Heels were led by the stellar play of guards Nico Dasca, Ethan Barnes and Luke Chelf, while centers Johnny King and DJ Rodman manned the paint and led the team in rebounding. Adam Flood, Mason Melcer, Sam Barela and Matt Olson played multiple positions and hit big shots throughout the weekend.

Connor Turnbow-Lindenstadt and Jackson Seybold III helped lead the Orange County Water Polo team to first place in the boys' 12-and-under division of the Commerce Holiday Invitational at Santa Ana Valley High. Turnbow-Lindenstadt is a seventh-grader at Corona del Mar Middle School and Seybold is a fifth-grader at Harbor View Elementary. OC Water Polo outscored opponents, 78-27, winning six games to claim the championship out of 24 teams. Lions take second The Pacific Soccer Club Lions, a Newport Beach-Costa Mesa boys' under 11 club soccer team, concluded its inaugural season with a second-place finish in the Coast Soccer League.

The Corona del Mar Gray Galaxy won the 2012 Mayor's Cup in the Region 57 boys' 10-and-under division with a 4-0 record and 12-1 goal differential. The Galaxy won the Region 57 boys-10-and-under division with a 12-1-1 record with a 38-11 advantage in goals scored. The Galaxy, which are coached by Mike Plumb and assistant Gary Vaughan , found themselves down a goal at halftime of the championship game of the Mayor's Cup before pulling out the 2-1 win. Corona del Mar is made up of Patrick Beemer, Carson Campbell, Cody Cousens, Zane El-Gamal, Kyle Jolas, Iain Kennedy, Troy Olson, AJ Plumb, Jason Plumb, Nicholas Stauffer, Jake Treska and Michael Vaughan.

UC Irvine men's soccer coach George Kuntz called it a leak in the dam. Anteaters senior forward Christopher Santana thanked God for the opportunity. And UCI senior defender Tarek Norad said though definitely not a miracle, that Santana's dramatic game-winning goal in the NCAA second-round playoff game against visiting North Carolina on Sunday created an amazing feeling that he and his teammates had simply earned. By whatever description, the difference in the 1-0 triumph, the second NCAA Tournament win in four postseason trips for the Anteaters, was as dramatic as they come.

A group of boys walked near a field at the Friday Night Lights flag football league in Costa Mesa two weeks ago. The boys were members of the Arizona Wildcats team. They were in awe about what they saw on the field: a team of girls, playing flag football and playing well. "Did you hear about those girls?" one boy said to his teammate. "Those girls are winning. They're undefeated. " There's fascination when it comes to the North Carolina Tar Heels of the Friday Night Lights fifth- and sixth-grade division.

The Newport Lightning Basketball Club's 10U/Fourth-Grade Boys' Team placed second in last weekend's Focus Fall Invitational Showcase at the MAP Facility in Garden Grove. The NLBC went 2-1 in pool play before facing a solid team from Chatsworth, Dune Citi. The NLBC lost by five in the finals, showing great determination coming back from a 19-point deficit in the final six minutes of play. The NLBC were led by Sanjay Tewari, Travis O'Neil, Michael Gurka, Aden Stein and Ayden Ziegler in scoring, while Conor Kelly, Jordan Stucki, Carter Healy, Brendan Jennings, Dylan Li and Anthony Marinelli led the team in rebounding and steals.

HUNTINGTON BEACH - Three nines lit up the scoreboard when it got too dark for the Costa Mesa National Little League team to keep playing Ocean View on Wednesday. They say cats have nine lives, but which Minor A baseball team will stay alive in the District 62 Tournament of Champions? When the two teams resume play at Wardlow Park on Thursday at 4 p.m., the score at the start of the ninth inning will be even at 9-9. "We can come for 10 minutes and lose and go home," Costa Mesa Manager Brian Lord said, "or you could win the game and stay here for another baseball game.
