If surfers in Newport Beach were wondering who had been burglarizing their cars while they were catching waves, police said they only had to look in their own backyard. Police on Wednesday arrested Michael Andrew Herz, 52, of Newport Beach, after a brief foot chase on the Balboa Peninsula. Following a string of vehicle burglaries in the city in December –— more for that month than in the last five years — police deployed a team to the area near River Avenue and Orange Street to spot suspicious activity.

Costa Mesa police tackled a man on the Santa Ana Country Club golf course after authorities say he nearly ran over a police officer and crashed a car through a fence into the country club while fleeing the scene of a suspected drug deal in a grocery store parking lot on Friday night. Police shot a second man involved in the incident with a Taser gun after he fled the parking lot on foot. Law enforcement officials now believe that the men were involved in an identity-theft scheme involving stolen bank account information, said Costa Mesa Police Lt. Clay Epperson.

Neither the cover of night nor a locked door could keep the law from four people police believe were stealing a plasma-screen TV from a vacated Newport Beach apartment Monday, authorities said. About 2:28 a.m., police received a call from the complex security guard at the Coronado at Newport Apartments, 1700 E. 16th St. He told officers he saw a woman, Saisha Miranda, 29, of Huntington Beach, pacing outside some apartments and occasionally looking up to the second floor and looking around as if she were a watch-out, authorities said.

A cash donation given to City Council candidate Gary Monahan has ignited a dispute over whether it was a contribution or earnings from a business deal he conducted outside of the election. The $7,000 he received was twice the amount given to any Costa Mesa candidate — and the biggest — through the end of September. On his first campaign finance disclosure statements, Monahan lists the money as a donation from Chino Hills Country Club, 2285 Newport Blvd., Costa Mesa.
