A DUI checkpoint in Costa Mesa netted nine arrests for suspicion of drunk or drugged driving, police said Wednesday. Nearly 3,000 vehicles passed through the drunk-driving checkpoint, according to police. Police screened 618 vehicles for impaired drivers and administered 23 field sobriety tests at the checkpoint near Newport Boulevard and Flower Street from 8 p.m. Friday to 3 a.m. Saturday, according police. Eight drivers were suspected of being drunk and one was suspected of using drugs.

Two Santa Ana residents were arrested on suspicion of attempted murder in connection with an April incident in which a Costa Mesa man was seen knocking on doors and telling residents he was being chased, police said. Jessica Gascon, 18, and her 17-year-old boyfriend, were arrested by Costa Mesa police on suspicion of luring Gascon's ex-boyfriend, a 20-year-old Costa Mesa resident, to the area of Maple and Wilson streets. It was there where the 17-year-old tried to shoot the victim, Costa Mesa police said Wednesday.

Costa Mesa police Wednesday arrested a man who allegedly tried to break into a truck using a welding torch so he could steal expensive equipment inside. At about 5 a.m., an officer saw a Dodge minivan in the 1500 block of Wintergreen Place with its license plates covered, according to a news release from the Costa Mesa Police Department. When the officer pulled up in his squad car, the minivan sped away down an alley before the driver and another man ditched the vehicle and fled on foot, police said.

An actor from "Final Destination 3" and "Pretty Little Liars" was arrested for driving drunk in Newport Beach, police said Tuesday. Ryan Earl Merriman, 28, of Choctaw, Okla., was arrested about 11:30 p.m. Sunday on suspicion of driving under the influence after police pulled him over near East Coast Highway and Bayside Drive, police spokeswoman Kathy Lowe said. Merriman's bail was set at $2,500 and he was released at 9 a.m. Monday, Lowe said. Merriman has also appeared in "Smallville," "The Pretender" and "The Ring Two," according to the Internet Movie Database.

An Irvine man was arrested Monday on suspicion of stabbing and killing his brother, police said. Laurence William Sullivan, 33, was arrested about 7:11 a.m. Monday after allegedly stabbing Daniel John Sullivan, 32, in the 4100 block of Old Mill Street, according to an Irvine Police Department news release. Officers found both men with injuries about 10:50 p.m. Oct. 16. Daniel Sullivan was taken to a local hospital where he died at 11:23 p.m. Detectives were still investigating what the two men were fighting about, Lt. Julia Engen said.

A man wanted in connection with a stolen vehicle was arrested Tuesday morning in Costa Mesa. Costa Mesa police arrested Anthony Thomas Guerrero, 26, of La Mirada, at 9 a.m. on suspicion of possession of stolen property and a parole violation at Newport Boulevard and 19th Street. Police have been searching for Guerrero since Feb. 1 after the authorities received a call reporting two men in a red Volvo possibly selling drugs near Tustin Avenue and 18th Street. It was discovered that the Volvo was reported stolen from Costa Mesa and Adon Lee Woodward, 26, of Costa Mesa, was arrested.

An Irvine man has been arrested for taking pictures up a woman's skirt at a Costa Mesa department store, police said Monday. Dylan Noel, 31 of Irvine, was arrested after security spotted him taking pictures up a woman's skirt at Nordstrom Rack at 901 South Coast Drive in Metro Pointe last week, said Costa Mesa Police Sgt. Phil Myers. Security saw Noel taking pictures of a 54-year-old Irvine woman about 4:30 p.m. Thursday and notified police. He was arrested and held on misdemeanor invasion of privacy.

Just six days out of county jail on a drug offense, a Costa Mesa man was arrested Friday on suspicion of burglarizing a home while he was under the influence. Damian Pedersen, 22, allegedly entered a woman's Costa Mesa home in the 100 block of Walnut Street early Friday afternoon while she was there alone and grabbed her purse, according to the Police Department. When the woman confronted Pedersen, he dropped her purse and fled, police said. Police then set up a perimeter to catch the alleged burglar.

Irvine police confiscated five shotguns and a rifle from a man they suspect broke into homes this month to steal the firearms and other items. Detectives arrested Kamal Valadez, 29, on suspicion of burglarizing a home on Las Palmas in Irvine where the shotguns had been taken Monday. Police believe Valadez is also linked to an April 5 burglary on Monte Vista. Police found purses and jewelry taken from that house in Valadez's car, according to a news release. Detectives identified Valadez as a suspect when they saw him take a duffel bag from a shrub near the home that was broken into Monday.

Two men were arrested over the weekend on suspicion of attempting to steal copper piping and wire from a Costa Mesa car dealership, police said. A security guard called police at 4:30 a.m. Sunday to report suspicious noises coming from Orange Coast Buick GMC Cadillac, 2600 Harbor Blvd., which is currently undergoing remodeling , according to a news release. Police said they found Manuel Ceballos, 40, of Santa Ana and Louis Montalvo, 46, of Costa Mesa holding flashlights and allegedly trying to steal copper piping and wire from what had been known as Nabers Cadillac for many years.

Newport Beach police arrested a man on suspicion of bicycling while drunk Saturday night. A caller reported that a man had fallen off his bike and was lying in the road near 28th Street and Newport Boulevard a few minutes before 9 p.m., according to police. When officers arrived, they found two San Clemente residents, James Zillmer, 29, and his wife, Jenny Zillmer, 28, both of whom seemed quite impaired, Newport police spokeswoman Jennifer Manzella said. Officials treated James Zillmer for injuries at the scene, Manzella said.

Sheriff's deputies arrested a woman on suspicion of attempted murder after she struck a bicycle patrol officer with her SUV in a parking lot at John Wayne Airport, officials said Wednesday. Rebecca McLaughlin, 48, of Irvine, hit the Orange County Sheriff's Department special officer on bike patrol at about 10:30 p.m. Tuesday on the third floor of the A-2 parking structure, authorities said. The bike patrol officer heard a crashing noise in the parking structure and went to check it out, sheriff's Lt. Jeff Hallock said.

Eleven convicts released into the community as part of the state's "realignment" plan aimed at relieving prison overcrowding were arrested in a sweep for violating the terms of their release, Costa Mesa police announced Wednesday. More than half of the offenders visited by police were found out of compliance with terms of their early releases. Irvine police detectives arrested a private tennis instructor on suspicion of lewd conduct with a 13-year-old student, police announced Friday. Jarrid Thomas Baldogo, 29, of Irvine, was booked Thursday, according to the Irvine Police Department. Detectives also served a search warrant on Baldogo's Westpark home. Baldogo had "inappropriate physical contact" with a 13-year-old student from February to April, police said. Authorities were notified about the possibility of the lewd conduct after the child's parents discovered text messages from Baldogo on their child's phone, police said.

Newport Beach police have arrested two men suspected of stealing an elderly woman's purse from a shopping cart, police announced Wednesday. Michal Polasek of Newport Beach and Joshua Faber of Costa Mesa, both 18, approached the woman from behind and grabbed her purse as she walked toward a Ralphs grocery store in Westcliff Plaza near Irvine Avenue and Westcliff Drive on Monday, according to the Newport Beach Police Department. Both men ran from the area, but witnesses held Polasek until officers arrived, police said.
