The Costa Mesa Fire Department arson unit is investigating the cause of a weekend fire at a commercial property on West Baker Street, authorities said Monday. Firefighters responded to a structure fire in the 1100 block of West Baker Street at 8:05 p.m. Saturday, according to a news release. The blaze started next to the loading dock area under a 20-foot-tall metal awning and had spread to the back wall of the building when fire crews arrived. The fire was extinguished in 15 minutes and no injuries were reported, the release said.

Newport Beach and Costa Mesa firefighters put out a fire Monday morning at a Newport Beach home that was under construction near the Santa Ana Country Club. There were no injuries; the damage is estimated at $70,000. Firefighters responded to the structure fire on Pegasus Street at 10:51 a.m. A fire that had started in the attic had spread throughout the room, authorities said. By the time firefighters arrived, smoke was billowing from the roof. They began an aggressive attack on the fire, and were able to extinguish it in 10 minutes, authorities said.

Flammable items placed too close to a water heater resulted in a garage fire on Joann Street in Costa Mesa over the weekend, fire officials said Monday. Costa Mesa firefighters responded to a report of a structure fire in a garage in the 700 block just before 8 p.m. Saturday. Residents from both attached apartments were evacuated, and no injuries were reported. The fire was contained to the garage and quickly extinguished, which minimized the total damage to the structure, according to a news release.

COSTA MESA — One person was sent to a nearby hospital with unspecified injuries after an apartment fire early Sunday morning, police and fire officials said. Damages from the fire were estimated to be about $75,000. Three adults and a child were displaced. About 1:03 a.m. Sunday, the Costa Mesa Fire Department got a call about a structure fire at 666 W. 18th St., and 26 firefighters responded to the blaze, according to a news release from police. Four engines, a truck, paramedic unit, battalion chief and heavy rescue squad were on scene, the release said.

The wooden deck of a Costa Mesa house caught fire Saturday night after a smoldering cigarette was thrown into a plastic trash can, authorities said. Costa Mesa firefighters responded to a report of a structure fire in the 1700 block of Orange Avenue at 8:19 p.m., according to a news release. The fire was determined to have been caused by a burning cigarette accidentally discarded in a plastic trash can, which melted and then burst into flames. The fire extended to the wood deck joists and planks, causing $1,000 in damage, the release said.

Costa Mesa firefighters extinguished a fire in a three-story commercial building on Harbor Boulevard, authorities said Thursday. Fire Capt. Mike Hurd and his crew responded to a report of a structure fire in the 2700 block at 8:43 p.m. Wednesday, according to a news release. When they arrived, the crew saw smoke and fire coming from a business on the first floor of the building. They cut the padlock on a security gate to gain access to the building and knocked down the fire within 10 minutes, according to the release.
