Center John Mann, a former Corona del Mar High standout, and defender Tim Hutten, a former UC Irvine All-American, are on the U.S. men's senior national team roster for the 2013 FINA World Championships that begin on Monday in Barcelona, Spain. Mann and Hutten are among the 13 athletes selected and two of the five returners from the team that competed at the 2012 Olympic Games. The team competed in a Four Nations Tournament held in Belgrade, Serbia this week as a warm-up to the world championships.

The U.S. men's national water polo team settled for a sixth-place finish at the 2003 World Championships after a 9-7 loss to Spain in Barcelona, Spain on Saturday. Two-time defending champion Spain outscored the U.S. team, 3-1, after a 6-6 tie midway through the third period. Still, it was the best finish for the Americans since a fourth-place showing at the 1990 World Championships in Perth, Australia. The U.S. team had finished seventh at the last two World Championships.

Mia Victori Blaya, age 44, passed away on Monday, Nov 29, after suffering a brain aneurysm three weeks earlier.  Mrs. Blaya, a Bilingual Education Professor at University Autonoma of Barcelona, in Bellaterra, Spain, and her family were living in the Eastbluff area of Newport Beach while she was working as a Research Scholar at CSU Long Beach.   Mrs. Blaya is survived by her husband, Jordi Carrascosa, their three children Gerard (age 13), David (age 9), and Pol (age 4), her sisters Montse Victori and Sandra Victori, her brothers, Xevi Victori and David Victori, and her parents, Salvador Victori and Rosa Maria Blaya.

Behind four first-quarter goals from former UC Irvine standouts Ryan Bailey and Jeff Powers, the U.S. men's national water polo team bounced back from a quarterfinal loss to Greece in the 2003 World Championships in Barcelona, Spain, with an 11-5 victory Thursday over Slovakia to advance to Saturday's fifth-place game. A win would give the U.S. its best finish since a fourth-place showing at the 1990 World Championships in Perth, Australia. The team has finished seventh at the last two World Championships.

Gabino Felgueroso may be a foreign exchange student from Spain, but he has plenty in common with many of the students at Corona del Mar High. Namely, he loves to surf. So the CdM sophomore loved it last week when he and his host family went to Hawaii for a week. They stayed at Wailea, on Maui Island, and Felgueroso went surfing at Paia Bay. “It was my dream,” Felgueroso said. “I wanted to go to Hawaii since I was 3 years old. It was pretty good. I surfed; I did everything.

Young Chang COSTA MESA -- A retired couple from Costa Mesa spent an entire month traveling by boat from Long Beach to Barcelona, Spain. Hans and Anita Knoblauch left mid-March and returned mid-April simply because they could. "Well, you have to have to do something when you retire, no?" mused Hans Knoblauch, who used to work as a field representative for a Swiss company that makes precision instruments. The couple boarded a cruise that went from California, through the Panama Canal, up the Atlantic Ocean and to Spain.

Anae, a backup goalie on the U.S. women's water polo team, will help the Americans battle Spain in the gold-medal game. The two teams, both 4-0-1 in the tournament, played to a 9-9 tie in group play. Newport Harbor High graduatesMisty May-Treanor(women's beach volleyball) and Esther Lofgren (women's eight rowing) have both earned gold medals in London.

Former UC Irvine men's basketball players Michael Wilder and Daman Starring have joined former teammate Adam Folker as members of professional teams overseas. Michael Wilder, a senior in 2012-13, is headed to Spain to play for UP Basquet Gandia. Starring, also a senior last season, has signed to play with La Fortezza Recanati in Italy. Folker, the two-time Big West Conference Hustle Award winner who graduated in the spring, signed earlier with a team in the Czech Republic.

Goalkeeper Tumua Anae, a former Corona del Mar High standout, and attacker Kelly Rulon, a Newport Beach resident, are on the U.S. women's senior national team roster for the 2013 FINA World Championships that begin Sunday in Barcelona Spain. Anae and Rulon were among 13 athletes selected and two of eight returners from the team that won gold at the 2012 Olympics. Recently, Team USA took home bronze from the FINA World League Super Final and then followed that with a second-place finish at the Dutch Trophy last week.

NEWPORT BEACH - Elisa Martinez Garcia turned 14 years old Thursday, and she celebrated that birthday with two distinct groups of friends. There are the other four young tennis players from Spain, with whom Garcia traveled to Newport Beach. Then there is the Sage Hill School tennis program. Some of those players were on hand to sing Garcia "Happy Birthday" as well at The Tennis Club Newport Beach, and there was a birthday cake. It's the first time Garcia has been to the United States.

James E. Spain, beloved father and grandfather, died peacefully in his home June 4 after a valiant fight with cancer. He was a longtime Newport Beach resident. He is survived by his cherished wife of 60 years, Marilyn, loving children James and his wife, Pamela, of Rancho Santa Fe, Michael and his wife, Elizabeth, of Corona Del Mar, daughter Sheryl Skidmore of Newport Beach, and five adoring granddaughters - Kate and Megan Skidmore, Emily and Caroline Spain, and Sheridan Spain. Jim was born in Redlands to Jim and Rose Spain.

A car dealership isn’t the most typical setting for an art exhibit, but don’t tell that to Newport Lexus. The second floor of the dealership on MacArthur Boulevard is currently home to an exhibit of 75 original works by the famous Spanish artist Salvador Dalí, a collection ranging from sculptures to graphic engravings to watercolor paintings. “We have two contrasting themes: Dalí and a Lexus car,” said Allen Moznett, general manager of Newport Lexus.
