Upscale Italian clothing retailer Brunello Cucinelli will open its first Orange County store at South Coast Plaza in April, according to a company news release. "We are very excited about the idea of opening our second California boutique in this prestigious international shopping destination," according to a prepared statement from Massimo Caronna, president of Brunello Cucinelli USA. "The Southern California market will be a new target for us and we are confident that the understated sensibility of our product will be well received by this new clientele," the statement continued.

Premium denim retailer Joe's Jeans is set to open first Orange County location at South Coast Plaza in time for back-to-school shopping, according to a company press release. The Los Angeles-based denim and fashion line will move into a 1,400-square-foot boutique space in the Crate and Barrel wing near Anthropologie. It is expected to be open by early August. "We are excited to celebrate our Joe's brand with the high-profile visibility associated with opening a store in South Coast Plaza, a world-class premier shopping destination," Marc Crossman, president of Joe's Jeans, said in a prepared statement.

Editor's note: This corrects the cost of Sunday's class. Yoga-inspired apparel brand Lululemon Athletica will open a retail store with a kickoff party Thursday night at South Coast Plaza, according to a store announcement. The store, which sells high-quality athletic apparel for men and women, officially opens for business on Friday. The opening night event runs from 6 to 9 p.m. and features musical group the Common Kings. The public is welcome to attend. In addition, a free yoga class hosted by CorePower Yoga at the store, Level One in the Crate & Barrel Wing, will take place from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Sunday.

South Coast Plaza officials rolled out the red carpet Tuesday evening in preparation for a visit from a newly appointed Chinese dignitary, underscoring the center's billing of itself as a destination for international shoppers. Cameras flashed and visitors lined up to greet Consul-General Ambassador Liu Jian, who was recently appointed to a post in Los Angeles. Then a trail of well-wishers followed Liu on a brief tour of the mall - past glittering crystal snowflakes suspended in mid-air and strings of lights.

South Coast Plaza finished the 2011-12 fiscal year with $1.4 billion in taxable sales, according to an Orange County Business Journal report. The number puts the Costa Mesa shopping center, with its 250 stores, significantly ahead of its nearest competitor down in Newport Beach, Fashion Island. The 160-store center reported $576 million last fiscal year and came in No. 2 within the county's top 20 shopping centers, the journal reported. Next to South Coast Plaza, Metro Pointe had $200.4 million and ranked No. 10 on the journal's list.

A flurry of new business activity is coming to South Coast Plaza with the announcement of nine new stores coming this year to the shopping center in Costa Mesa, according to a press release. The new stores will include upscale garment retailers Brunello Cucinelli, Diane von Furstenberg, Lululemon Athletica, Madewell and Soma Intimates, accessories retailer Longchamp, watchmaker Omega, and Lego and Microsoft. "This is just the beginning of a very exciting year of welcoming sought-after brands and concepts to our incredible family of retailers," Debra Gunn Downing, executive director of marketing at South Coast Plaza, said in a prepared statement.

COSTA MESA — Just in time for back-to-school shopping, rock super star Madonna and her 13-year-old daughter, Lourdes, have teamed up for a new clothing line that debuted today at Macy's stores across the country. Shoppers visited the South Coast Plaza location in search of the pop star's designs. The new juniors clothing line called Material Girl offers apparel, footwear and accessories "designed for affordability and replenishment." Items in the collection will retail from $12 to $40. The collection, which includes hip-hop, ballet and European influences, is also available online.

South Coast Plaza will ring in the Chinese Lunar New Year - a week in advance, anyway - with festivities Thursday and Friday in the shopping center's Jewel Court area. With the Year of the Horse set to officially begin Jan. 31, live performers from Zhejiang province, including dancers, acrobats and opera singers, will give demonstrations from 6 to 7 p.m. and 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. both days. Artisans from the region will also make crafts in the area from 1 to 6 p.m. both days. In addition, a photography exhibit titled "Beautiful Zhejiang," which features images of the province, will be on display through Friday on Level 1 in front of Assouline.

COSTA MESA — Microsoft plans to open a second Orange County location at South Coast Plaza Thursday with a visit by reality TV power couple Lamar Odom and Khloé Kardashian, a store spokeswoman confirmed. The opening will allow Microsoft to compete at the retail level with the Apple Store location at South Coast Plaza. The 4,900 square-foot store is located on the first floor between the Jewel and Carousel courts, and will feature a selection of PCs running Windows software, Xbox consoles and the Xbox Kinect, Windows phones and a variety of software and accessories, spokeswoman Lindsey Kociela said Wednesday.

More than 250 personnel from the FBI and local fire and police departments worked through the night at South Coast Plaza Thursday practicing how they'd respond to a terrorist attack. The FBI coordinated the drill that tested multiple law-enforcement agencies and other first responders on how well they work together. SWAT and rescue teams ran through responses to a range of scenarios during the exercise that started after South Coast Plaza closed and ran from about 10 p.m. to 4.m. Costa Mesa, Irvine, Newport Beach and Huntington Beach police all took part in the drill.

Japanese apparel brand Uniqlo  will open its first Southern California stores this fall, including one at South Coast Plaza on Sept. 3. The chain will hire several hundred employees to run the new locations, which include Los Cerritos Center , the Glendale Galleria , the Beverly Center and Northridge Fashion Center . Uniqlo, known for its array of basics, has 20 open stores in the U.S. and 1,200 worldwide. The brand is owned by Japanese holding company Fast Retailing Co. , which also owns apparel names such as Theory and Helmut Lang , which recently opened its first U.S. outlet store at Desert Hills Premium Outlets . The first Uniqlo opened in Hiroshima, Japan, in 1984.

A DUI suspect who was running from police nearly fell two stories at South Coast Plaza before officers detained him and possibly saved his life, authorities said. Costa Mesa police said Francisco Novela, 37, of Santa Ana crashed his 1972 Ford Ranger truck into a palm tree near the Segerstrom Center for the Arts and fled the scene around 10 p.m. Friday. After a foot pursuit west over the Bristol Street bridge and into South Coast Plaza, Novela was preparing to jump over a four-foot railing near the Claim Jumper restaurant, authorities said.

Area nonprofits are collaborating next month on an effort to break the world record for most letters written to military personnel in one month. The "Letters From Home" campaign - organized by the Costa Mesa-based Festival of Children Foundation, Encino-based Operation Gratitude and Irvine-based Team Kids - begins at noon April 12 in South Coast Plaza's Carousel Court. The goal is to collect 10,000 letters between April 12 and May 12 and be eligible for a Guinness World Record, organizers said.

The Costa Mesa City Council weighed in on a proposed charter Tuesday night, giving city attorneys direction on when to schedule the first of two public hearings. The first hearing is April 22 - a change from the originally proposed date, April 15, to avoid conflicting with the second night of Passover. Throughout the year, council members will have a chance to amend the five-page document before voting whether to place it on the November general election ballot. A majority of the 13-member Charter Committee, after 10 months of work and debate, approved the draft document last week.

The stunning contemporary Bottega Veneta boutique at South Coast Plaza closed to the public last Thursday evening for a cocktail reception to introduce its spring 2014 line. In-store events in recent years have become serious social, business and charitable gatherings. In one sense, such parties are something of a cultural phenomenon. Who turns out, what charitable causes benefit, how the retail and business communities react to the product on display all add up. Success is often measured by the number of guests taking out the American Express Platinum Card to validate the experience.

Welcome to the Year of the Horse. The Lunar New Year debuts Friday. Last week in the O.C., the Consul General of the People's Republic of China in Los Angeles, Ambassador Liu Jian , traveled to Costa Mesa to cut a ribbonand front opening ceremonies for the Lunar New Year celebrations at South Coast Plaza. Hundreds of guests converged upon Jewel Court, sampling gourmet Asian cuisine and signature cocktails. The crowd enjoyed performances by members of the Zhejiang Cultural Festival from China's Zhejiang Province.

It is a very special week for South Coast Repertory. On Wednesday, the complex was renamed the David Emmes and Martin Benson Theatre Center. Previously, the SCR complex had taken the name of Paul Folino , former board president and honorary trustee, whose $10-million gift in 2002 was honored with the renaming of SCR the Folino Theatre Center. Last fall, on the occasion of the 50th-anniversary gala season opening ball for SCR, Folino generously told the patrons gathered for the celebration that his gift in honor of the 50th anniversary was to rename the center and recognize its founders, Emmes and Benson.

Katrina Foley, Newport-Mesa Unified School District trustee, is the new president of the Costa Mesa High School Foundation. The foundation announced a new slate of 14 officers Thursday during its annual meeting and lunch at the Capital Grille in South Coast Plaza. Debbie Speer will continue to serve as vice president, with Joe Wolf as treasurer; Debra Wanbaugh as financial secretary and Donna Todd as secretary. This year's officers represent a wide variety of Costa Mesa residents, expanding the overall view of the foundation.
