Will Reichenstein tallied two goals and an assist to lead the Slammin' Smurfs to a four-goal win over the Beach Bums Saturday at Kaiser School in Costa Mesa in boys under-14 soccer action. The Smurfs used accurate passes to score goals, getting contributions from several players, including Branden Rowley, Chris Gutierrez, Andrew Kaban and Kyle Caldwell, who all scored one goal in the Region 97 duel. Caldwell and Kaban assisted on Reichenstein's two goals.

Two goals apiece from Will Reichenstein and Phil Garrett helped propel the Slammin' Smurfs of AYSO Region 97 boys under-14 soccer to beat the Avengers, 6-2. Ben Swift and Rex Nelson scored one goal apiece for the Smurfs as Andrew Kaban assisted on one of Garrett's goals. Reichenstein assisted Swift's goal. Smurfs goalkeeper Tommy Olson blocked an Avenger shot in the fourth quarter as Edgar Torres, David Garrett and Chris Gutierrez held the Avengers at bay defensively.

The Slammin' Smurfs capped the AYSO soccer season with a 3-1 record in the Boys under-14 Region 97 Playoffs last weekend. Wins over North Irvine, South Irvine and Corona del Mar allowed the Smurfs to reach the semifinals, where they lost to Tustin, 1-0. Coach Chad Brown's crew defeated North Irvine, 5-1, with Will Reichenstein, David Garrett, Andrew Kaban, Robert DiFrancesco and Ben Swift each scoring goals. Sean Marshall, Jordan Harris and Phil Garrett played strong defense.

CORONA DEL MAR - The Smurfs, an AYSO Region 57 Division 4 soccer team had their highest offensive output of the season to knock off the Patriots, 8-3, Saturday. Christian Elliott had three goals, Geoffrey Grant had two goals and single tallies were contributed by Brian Hultman, Rob Knapp and Matt Manni. The defense for the Smurfs, led by Brent Greech, Mike Lanni and Eric Nelson, shut down the Patriots late in the the game. Julian Marisco had two goals and Chris Horton had one goal for the Patriots.

The Slammin' Smurfs of AYSO Region 97-Boys Under 14 Division won their first game of the season Saturday, a 2-1 win over a team from Corona del Mar, as AYSO soccer season got underway. Rex Nelson scored the first Smurf goal on a combined assist from Branden Rowley and Phil Garrett, as Kyle Caldwell provided the second goal. Smurf goalkeeper Tommy Olson made several key saves through the first three quarters. Christopher Gutierrez took over as goalkeeper for the final quarter and knocked down a shot on goal.

Two goals from Jonathan Figueroa with assists from Spencer Rautus and Dillan Freiberg keyed Newport Beach in a 3-2 win over eighth-seed San Clemente in Boys under-11 Plus Team play in AYSO Region 97 soccer. Rautus scored in the last half with an assist from Blake Davey. Offensive captain Jake Manning led the charge and was rounded out by Brian Baca and Whitney Regan. Captain Davey led the defense in goal and was helped in the net for one quarter by Figueroa.

Brian Siemonsma scored the only goal 15 minutes into the second half and the Boys under-13 AYSO Pacific Soccer Club Newport bronze team narrowly defeated the San Juan Capistrano Titans, 1-0, in Region 97 action. The win improves the Pacific Soccer club to 5-1-1 on the season. Garrett Heiser, Denny Perdomo and Adrian Buonanoce kept the attack going and Josh Jacobs, Julian Hernandez, Calvin Jhunjhuwala, Andrew Wilson, Nick Sheffield and Jeremy Anish were steady at midfield.

The Bruins received a total team effort to beat the Panthers, 5-2, in its final regular season game in Boys under-12 AYSO Region 97 soccer. Taylor Allee scored three goals off crossing passes from Bryan Rhodes, Blake Kelly and Trevor Noon and the defense was anchored by Brian Kekemeyer, Daniel Netzer, Max Van Berg, Christian Taggert and Andy Brown. Bruin midfielders Luc Heasley, Sean Mueller, Jake Caughill and Ricky Sullivan provided defensive support and started Bruins' attacks.

The Newport Knockouts answered a 2-0 deficit and pulled out a 3-2 win over the Costa Mesa Sudden Death in AYSO Region 97 Girls under-16 APP Plus action at Harper Community Center Sunday. Debbie Yoder-Lee scored the game-winner off an indirect kick for the Knockouts. Costa Mesa opened the game with an aggressive attack which led to its 2-0 lead. However, the Knockouts regrouped and started their comeback with a well-placed goal by Kelsea Dunn. Then, Maloire McMains evened the score with a highlight-type long shot for a goal.

The Slammin' Smurfs and The Who played to a 2-2 tie in Boys under-14 action in AYSO Region 97 soccer Saturday at Mariners Park. The Who got goals from Will Atwood, who assisted Tobin Olson for the team's first goal. Juan Trujillo and Nick Normandin both assisted on Atwood's goal. Trujillo made seven saves in goal. Andrew Kaban scored the Smurfs' first goal in the first half and Ben Swift scored the Smurfs' second goal in the second half. Kyle Caldwell and Will Reichenstein moved the ball through the midfield for the Smurfs and Who sweepers Jacob Silverman and Brandon Parole provided strong support.

The Smurfs are enjoying a renaissance in our household. You're familiar with the Smurfs, aren't you? Those little blue men — and one blue woman, (the "Smurfette") — who inhabit little mushroom-like cottages in a clearing somewhere in the midst of a deep, dark forest. The Smurfs were introduced to the world in 1958 by Peyo, a Belgian cartoonist. In French they originally were called "Les Schtroumpfs" — an essentially untranslatable term. The name was later rendered as "Smurf" in Dutch, and shortly thereafter entered the American vernacular.

Four different scorers for The Who and strong defense helped in the 4-0 victory over the Honey Nut Cheerios in Boys under-14 soccer play in AYSO Region 97. The Who advance to area play. Travis Kuhns converted a free kick for the first goal followed by a single goal from Will Atwood and a third-quarter score from Jonathan Gordon. Jamie Gayley tallied the final score. Timothy Regan and Vinnie Finn played tough at midfield and Juan Trujillo turned away shots on goal with help on defense from Nick Normandin, Christian Harrison, Jacob Silverman and Michael Perkins.
