FOR THE RECORD The story "Testimony: Woman knew of plot to kill local couple" in Friday's Daily Pilot misidentified one of the people accused of slaying Newport Beach couple Tom and Jackie Hawks in 2004. John Fitzgerald Kennedy, 41, is scheduled to be tried on murder charges next year. A woman accused of participating in the slaying of a Newport Beach couple two years ago couldn't have been ignorant of the crime because she was present when the other alleged killers worked to profit from it, prosecutors sought to prove through testimony in the woman's murder trial on Thursday.

After his attorney asked for more time Friday, a Long Beach man is scheduled to be sentenced in March for killing a Newport Beach couple in 2004 by throwing them overboard tied alive to an anchor and slashing another man’s throat in the Mexican desert a year earlier. Skylar Deleon, 29, is scheduled to be sentenced March 20 at Orange County’s Central Justice Center in Santa Ana for killing three people for money. A jury recommended Deleon be put to death in November.

When John Fitzgerald Kennedy sat in the defendant’s seat in Judge Frank Fasel’s ninth-floor courtroom Friday morning, awaiting sentencing for killing a Newport Beach couple years earlier, no one came to his aid. As is customary before many sentencings, the judge afforded both the victim’s and the defendant’s friends and family a chance to weigh in before he determined whether Kennedy should get life in prison without parole,...

Two days after Tom and Jackie Hawks were allegedly tied to an anchor and thrown from their boat into the ocean to drown, Jennifer Henderson-Deleon bundled up Jackie Hawks' clothes, kept a bag for herself, sent some to Goodwill and trashed the rest, according to closing arguments in her murder trial. Did that mean Henderson-Deleon is insensitive or good-natured? Defense attorney Michael Molfetta told jurors in his closing argument that donating the clothes to Goodwill showed how generous she is, but prosecutor Matt Murphy said it displayed a callousness.

Jury deliberations began about 10 a.m. this morning in the capital murder trial of former child actor Skylar Deleon. The jury must decide whether to recommend death by lethal injection or life in prison for Deleon, who was convicted Oct. 20 for the 2004 murders of Newport Beach yacht owners Tom and Jackie Hawks and 2003 murder of Anaheim resident John Jarvi. Deleon, 29, who once had a bit part on the television show “Mighty Morphine Power Rangers” stole $50,000 from Jarvi in 2003 before slashing his throat in the desert outside of Ensenada, Mexico.

Assuming a guilty verdict is inevitable, the defense attorney for a Long Beach man accused of killing three people, including a Newport Beach couple, said Thursday when jurors consider the death penalty, they have to ask themselves why these killings happened. Defense Attorney Gary Pohlson acknowledged that his client’s guilt by now was a shock to no one. In his opening statements last week, he said his client, Skylar Deleon, 29, is guilty of killing three people. But that fact alone doesn’t warrant the death sentence, Pohlson told jurors.

Marisa O'Neil The investigation into the mysterious disappearance of a local couple is making progress, but detectives are no closer to finding the pair, police said Monday. Family and friends have not heard from Tom and Jackie Hawks, 57 and 47, respectively, for nearly two months, since they sold the Well Deserved, a 55-foot yacht they had lived on in Newport Harbor. Their disappearance now "absolutely" looks like foul play was involved, Newport Beach Sgt. Steve Shulman said Monday.

A woman on trial for participating in the killing of Tom and Jackie Hawks was really a caring, loving and sometimes naive mother, not the one calling the shots in the family as the prosecution has contended, her friends testified Tuesday as both sides rested their cases. Deputy Dist. Atty. Matt Murphy and defense attorney Michael Molfetta will offer closing arguments Wednesday in the trial of Jennifer Henderson-Deleon. Henderson-Deleon's husband, Skylar Deleon, Alonso Machain and John Fitzgerald Kennedy have also been charged with killing the couple, but their trials are scheduled for next year.
