MISSION VIEJO - When everything comes together, Corona del Mar High track and field coach Bill Sumner said this could be the best boys' team he's had in decades. "Everybody has to show up and all the cylinders have to be firing," Sumner said. "We've got about 12 boys, and they all do more than one event. If all 12 boys show up and all the pistons are firing, this is the best team I've had in about 20 years. " Keeping with the car analogy, CdM did sputter at times on Saturday at the Orange County Track & Field Championships.

Last year at the Pacific Coast Championships, the Corona del Mar High sailing team missed a trip to the nationals by one point. One point. It was painful. Yet it's also been a source of motivation for this year's team as CdM continues in its quest to reach the Fleet Race Nationals. CdM returns to the Pacific Coast Championships Saturday at Cabrillo Beach Yacht Club in San Pedro, where the squad must finish in the top five to move on to the Super Bowl of high school sailing. "Last year we were fifth at Pacific Coast Championships, but we missed it by one point," CdM sailing coach Nate Dunham said.

Corona del Mar High senior defensive end Tim Reinhardt has accepted a preferred walk-on spot with the San Diego State football program, said Bill, his father, in an email on Wednesday. "We believe this is the best fit for Tim," said Bill, adding that his son received preferred walk-on offers from Oregon, Utah, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and the University of San Diego. Reinhardt, a 6-foot-3, 225-pounder, earned All-CIF Southern Section Southern Division accolades for the second straight season.

Blake Grable had never played in a basketball gym as packed as Corona del Mar High's on Feb. 22. It seemed like it was standing-room only. It seemed like the entire school came to watch the Sea Kings play La Verne Damien in the semifinals of the CIF Southern Section Division 3AA playoffs. Grable's uncle, Don, is the athletic director at CdM, and on that night, he told fans to squeeze in to make room for others. There just wasn't enough room for more than 1,000 bodies to find a seat.

It's rare to catch Corona del Mar High senior Molly Rovzar off guard on the girls' lacrosse field. She is a senior midfielder and team captain for the Sea Kings. Despite missing two games this year due to illness, she leads the team in most statistical categories like goals (43), draw controls (24) and ground balls (35). When Rovzar was asked her favorite movie, though, she had to pause. She switched between comedies. First she said, "Step Brothers. " Then a moment later, she changed it to "Bridesmaids," which she correctly remembered was her choice when she was Daily Pilot Athlete of the Week for the first time last year.

CORONA DEL MAR - Brett Olson went two for four with a run batted in to help lead the Corona del Mar High past University and star pitcher Jordan Scheftz, 9-7, Friday at CdM. The Sea Kings (6-11, 2-5 in league) pounded out 10 hits on Scheftz, the UC Irvine-bound senior who went the whole way. CdM overcame a 5-0 deficit after two innings. The Sea Kings scored two in the second inning after Nolan McCarthy's two-RBI single. CdM added two more runs in the third, highlighted by Tyler Duncan's double.

IRVINE - John Kessler called himself "a big history buff," so it's understandable why the University High boys' tennis coach went into Thursday's Pacific Coast League match against rival Corona del Mar a bit apprehensive. Kessler said CdM was the last Orange County team to beat University in a dual match, in 2006. In that match, Kessler said his team was short-handed. Fast forward seven years, and the Trojans were again not at full strength Thursday. Two of their top three players, UCLA-bound senior Gage Brymer and Yale-bound senior Tyler Lu, are playing at the prestigious Easter Bowl tournament in Rancho Mirage.
