Richard Dunn Despite a shaky round on the Mesa Linda golf course Saturday in the 30th annual Costa Mesa City Championships at Costa Mesa Golf & Country Club, original champion Jim George still remembers that delightful summer afternoon in 1973 like it was yesterday. George, the only golfer to play in every Costa Mesa City Championship (formerly known as the Will Jordan Classic), was a San Diego State player at the time and recalled that his mother insisted he return home to Costa Mesa for the summer and find a job. "I wanted to play golf that summer, and I was hired at Fedco," said George, a 1970 Estancia High graduate who played at 5:30 a.m. every morning that summer before clocking in at the department store which no longer exists.

Richard Dunn It can make you feel old knowing the Costa Mesa City Championship will celebrate its 30th anniversary this year at the Costa Mesa Golf & Country Club. The championship, formerly known as the Will Jordan Classic, typically draws the top amateurs in Orange County and enjoys some of the best public golf lore in county history. Future major championship winners on the PGA Tour, Scott Simpson and Mark O'Meara, won Costa Mesa city titles in the 1970s, while the inaugural champion, Jim George, owns the distinction of playing in every championship.

NEWPORT BEACH ? Less than a day after being taken to the Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian emergency room because of chest pains, Dana Quigley was back Friday for the first round of the Toshiba Classic. Quigley, who has high blood pressure, said he was inspired to do so by his 92-year-old mother. "She's as tough as nails," said Quigley, the 2005 Champions Tour Player of the Year. "She wouldn't have stayed in the house today." Quigley received a blood pressure check 1 1/2 hours before his tee time.

NEWPORT BEACH ? At age 50, Scott Simpson has finally found his niche. The PGA has always been a grind for the 26-year veteran. No breaks between tournaments, always stressing to make the cut and keep his card. It is a completely different environment now that Simpson has joined the PGA Champions Tour. 2006 is his first full season after playing four tournaments in 2005. The San Diego native and University of Southern California graduate, who roomed with fellow Champions Tour pro Craig Stadler in college, feels comfortable here.

It might be a little presumptuous, and it certainly adds pressure to the defending champion, but it's impossible not to think about Big Canyon Country Club's Mike Carpenter and his future in golf as he prepares for the 30th annual Costa Mesa City Championship at Costa Mesa Golf & Country Club Saturday and Sunday. Carpenter, who qualified last month for the U.S. Amateur Championship Aug. 19-25 at Oakland Hills, could be the Costa Mesa event's next Mark O'Meara or Scott Simpson.
