COSTA MESA — Krystal Redman raced out of her home Monday night last week, hopped into the trailer she had bought four days earlier and sped off to smoke-filled Santiago Canyon on a rescue mission. The Texas native had no friends or relatives trapped in the wildfire areas, but she didn’t venture out to rescue human evacuees. As Redman maneuvered her trailer through neighborhoods tinted with flame, she and a friend roped horses, deer and other animals that wandered on the grounds their owners had fled.

Orange Coast College men's soccer continues on the rise following Tuesday's 3-1 victory over visiting Santiago Canyon in Orange Empire Conference play. The Pirates, now 5-4-1 overall, improved to 2-0 in the OEC as they stretched their unbeaten streak to five games. Coast took an early 1-0 lead on a goal from Weston Langdon, who scored in the seventh minute off an assist from Stanton Duke. Duke, near the goal, headed a free kick from Mike Spahr and Langdon beat Santiago Canyon keeper Robert Adams in a race to the ball to easily score from just a few feet out. In the 18th minute, Coast stretched the lead to 2-0 as Ryan Lancaster slid to kick the ball in for a goal off a long throw-in from Chance Daniel.

Russell Turner turned 41 Monday and, at least by late morning, the second-year UC Irvine men's basketball coach's office displayed no signs of a party. Coming off a 13-19 debut campaign, embarking on the 2011-12 season with the least-experienced roster in NCAA Division I (including eight freshmen), and being pegged for last place in the nine-team Big West Conference preseason poll, there appears to be little to celebrate. Yet the energy and enthusiasm that created a buzz long after the former NBA, Stanford and Wake Forest assistant was hired, clearly continues to burn more brightly than the appropriate assemblage of birthday candles.

"It isn't whether you win or lose, it's how you play the game" is an old sports adage, maybe outdated in today's "win-at-all-costs" era. But at Irvine Valley College, women's soccer Coach Simon Davies is old school. He has to be. The Lasers play in the extremely tough Orange Empire Conference in the competitive Southern California area. So after a year in which his team went 5-16, including 3-13 in the conference, Davies keeps it all in perspective. Ask Davies how he will turn around the fortunes of his club and he jokes: "Pray harder to the soccer gods.

The Pirates aren’t there yet, but they are peaking as the season heads toward the Orange Empire Conference tournament, Collins said. And the people doling out rankings notice. The Pirates are third in Southern California, which include 23 teams from the OEC, Western States and Foothill conferences, in rankings posted on calccgolf.com, a web site for Southern California community college golf.

Wearing a green tie in honor of Earth Day, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger dedicated Upper Newport Bay and Crystal Cove State Park today as part of a larger 50,000-acre state landmark. “Only in California can you see 50,000 acres of natural landmarks in the middle of one of the nation’s most vibrant urban and economic areas,” Schwarzenegger said in an open-air ceremony at a historic cattle ranch near Irvine. Crystal Cove and the upper bay are part of the Irvine Ranch Land Reserve.
